TOPIC: ELISHA AND THE SONS OF THE PROPHET (PT.1d)
SUB-TOPIC: THE MAN ELISAH
BIBLE TEXT: 2KG.4v1-7
1Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.
2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.
4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.
6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
Elijah walked the surface of this earth as one of the most audacious and powerful man of all times. However, there was another man that operated not just in the fullness of the capacity of Elijah who locked up the heavens for over three years and called down fire from heaven on at least three different occasions; but twice the power of the powerful Elijah. His name as we all know is Elisah. There is one remarkable difference between the two men and that is what we are to consider next.
vi. 2Kg.6v22-Compassionate
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
The above scripture aptly summarizes the difference between Elisha and Elijah. Elisha ordered the king to set bread and water before foreign army who came to arrest him. In the case of Elijah the bible gives us his own reaction to similar situation even by military officers who came to arrest him in 2Kg.1v10 as follows:
And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
What he did to the captain was yet repeated in verse 12 thus claiming the lives of two captains and one hundred soldiers. Do not forget that he had earlier slain four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal in 1Kg.18v40 after bringing down fire from heaven.
Compassion was that main thing that distinguished the two spiritual colossuses. This was further shown in 2Kg.6v31-32 as follows:
31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
32 But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?
Elisha carried power in enormous capacity, yet compassion became the compass of capacity. The famine was not the making of Elisha unlike that in the days of Elijah who called for the drought in the land by the command of his word (1Kg.17v1). The severity of the famine would make Elisha to overlook the emotional outburst of the king and yet proffer solution by bringing words of hope and assurance of a better tomorrow within 24 hours in 2Kg.7v1.
Listen, no one really cares to know how powerful you are as much as they are interested in knowing how much you care. This was the central feature in the ministry life of Elisha, immediately he had of the devastating development in the house of the widow of the son of the prophet that died with tons of debt, he intervened. We can yet see that the approach of the two men contrast significantly in the way they related to the two widows that came their way. In the case of the widow of Zarephath, Elijah tested her before helping her by demanding that she should make food for her first despite the woman’s protest in 1Kg.17v12 as follows:
And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
The woman passed the test and enjoyed abundance in the midst of famine indeed. In the case of Elisha as seen in our bible text above, Elisha thought less about himself. He provided the life-turning solution and demanded for nothing. I am not surprised that he did the same when Naaman brought bags of silver and garments in 2Kg.5.
Do you know that the fuel of Jesus’ ministry was not the monetary donations of the women following Him but rather the compassion flowing in Him (Mt.9v36, 14v14, 15v32, 20v34)? Let this mind be in you as it was in Elisha and Christ Jesus (Phl.2v5)
