TOPIC: ELISHA AND THE SONS OF THE PROPHET (PT.1d)
SUB-TOPIC: THE MAN ELISAH
BIBLE TEXT: 2KG.4v1-7
1Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.
2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.
4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.
6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
Elijah walked the surface of this earth as one of the most audacious and powerful man of all times. However, there was another man that operated not just in the fullness of the capacity of Elijah who locked up the heavens for over three years and called down fire from heaven on at least three different occasions; but twice the power of the powerful Elijah. His name as we all know is Elisah. There is one remarkable difference between the two men and that is what we are to consider next.
vi. 2Kg.6v22-Compassionate
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
The above scripture aptly summarizes the difference between Elisha and Elijah. Elisha ordered the king to set bread and water before foreign army who came to arrest him. In the case of Elijah the bible gives us his own reaction to similar situation even by military officers who came to arrest him in 2Kg.1v10 as follows:
And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
What he did to the captain was yet repeated in verse 12 thus claiming the lives of two captains and one hundred soldiers. Do not forget that he had earlier slain four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal in 1Kg.18v40 after bringing down fire from heaven.
Compassion was that main thing that distinguished the two spiritual colossuses. This was further shown in 2Kg.6v31-32 as follows:
31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
32 But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?
Elisha carried power in enormous capacity, yet compassion became the compass of capacity. The famine was not the making of Elisha unlike that in the days of Elijah who called for the drought in the land by the command of his word (1Kg.17v1). The severity of the famine would make Elisha to overlook the emotional outburst of the king and yet proffer solution by bringing words of hope and assurance of a better tomorrow within 24 hours in 2Kg.7v1.
Listen, no one really cares to know how powerful you are as much as they are interested in knowing how much you care. This was the central feature in the ministry life of Elisha, immediately he had of the devastating development in the house of the widow of the son of the prophet that died with tons of debt, he intervened. We can yet see that the approach of the two men contrast significantly in the way they related to the two widows that came their way. In the case of the widow of Zarephath, Elijah tested her before helping her by demanding that she should make food for her first despite the woman’s protest in 1Kg.17v12 as follows:
And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
The woman passed the test and enjoyed abundance in the midst of famine indeed. In the case of Elisha as seen in our bible text above, Elisha thought less about himself. He provided the life-turning solution and demanded for nothing. I am not surprised that he did the same when Naaman brought bags of silver and garments in 2Kg.5.
Do you know that the fuel of Jesus’ ministry was not the monetary donations of the women following Him but rather the compassion flowing in Him (Mt.9v36, 14v14, 15v32, 20v34)? Let this mind be in you as it was in Elisha and Christ Jesus (Phl.2v5)

BIBLE TEXT: 2KG.2v9-14
9And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
The more we study the man Elisha, we get to know how much we can get to learn from the life of the great man of God who demanded and received from a man what the person could never have had. Elisha as a person have been shown to us as a committed servant, a man of faith, a worshipper and fearless by all standards. Yet there are quite some more to learn about this father to many prophets called the sons of the prophet.
v. 2Kg.2v10-Focused
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
The Lord Jesus did encourage us to be focused on what we is important in the journey of life by saying in Mt.6v22 as follows:
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
The above instruction was already inbuilt for Elisha who had demanded for the double portion of the spirit that was in Elijah. In response, Elijah had given a single condition that could make the impossible literarily a reality. The condition precedent is for Elisha to witness his take off from planet earth.
As simple as this might have sounded, you may wish to remember that not even fellow sons of the prophet like him could distract him whether at Bethel or Jericho. This is unlike many believers who go to church in this age only to return without any meaningful encounters as all that they could point to was the gist with their friends or social media postings on their electronic devises.
Note that there is grave consequence of not being focused in life as this was shown in 1Kg.20v39-40 where the bible says as follows:
39 And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
In the immediately one sets one’s hands on the plough; there is no room to look elsewhere as stated by the Lord in Lk.9v62. We must not forget that as believers we are called to look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Heb.12v2). Nothing was powerful enough to prevent Elisha from fulfilling the condition for empowerment as 2Kg.2v11-12 says thus:
11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
It is quite intriguing to also note that even Moses was empowered by choosing to focus on the right in Ex.3v2-3 where he saw the burning bush and declare then and there that he would turn aside to see the great sight. The confession of Paul who never physically moved with Jesus boasted of much revelation than most if not all the apostle by reason of focus as he said in Gal.1v16 as follows:
To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.
While David must have learnt his lesson of consequences of distraction after looking at the bathing wife of Uriah, he realized that focus would make us see wonders why everyone else reads history (Ps.119v18).

There is more to Elisha than just being a man of faith and just a servant. As these two traits can be seen in the lives of many patriarchs in the bible. For instance, Job was a servant of God and we all know that he was a man of faith. However, I would like to proceed with some other essential attributes of Elisha as we progress in this teaching series:
iii. 2Kg.3v15-Worshipper
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
One of the attributes of Elisha was worship. He was a man well knowledgeable in the efficacy and operational dynamics of worship. As a matter of understanding, he was well aware that when one intends to see the hands of God at work, worship proceeds from us to God. When he deployed it in 2Kg.3v15, it actually provoked the hands of God. According to Ex.15v11, the Lord God of Israel is fearful in praise and does wonders in worship. No wonder David could kill Goliath, lion and bear among others despite being an inexperience young boy because he was a worshipper. The book of Ps.119v164 says of David as follows:
Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

iv. 2Kg.6v16-Fearless
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
The book of Pr.28v1 says that the righteous are as bold as lion and this quite described the man, Elisha. He was bold in his dealing with people and circumstances. His decision to not to even come out to meet Naaman but to instruct him to bath seven times in Jordan with assurance of boldness even before a serving General of the army of an enemy-state (2Kg.5v10). The same man was the one who faced off multitudes of mockers among whom forty-two were eaten up by just two bears (2Kg.2v23-24). The man Elisha, was never afraid to say his mind even to kings as seen in 2Kg.3v13-14 that says as follows:
13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
The truth is that God always show up for people who never entertained fear in the face of any circumstance they faced. For instance, He showed up for David before Goliath, for Moses at the Red Sea and also for Joshua in all his battles and several others in the bible.

This teaching series is to thoroughly examine the life and person of Elisha, the only man who got and operated with the double portion of the spirit in another man. He asked as seen in the passage above for the double portion of the spirit in which his predecessor in office operated with. We shall be journeying into who he was both as a son of the prophet and a spiritual father to others.
It is worth remembering that this God of Elijah is always present and available not only because He is Omnipresent God but also because the bible says His arms are not short nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear (Is.59v1). The bible says God is interested in showing Himself strong on behalf of the people provided certain attributes are found in them. This is how 2Chr.16v9 puts it:
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore, from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
As seen in the bible text above, He came through for Elisha the question is what are the things in Elisha that made God of Elijah to show up for Elisha?
ELISHA’S ATTRIBUTES
i. 2Kg.3v11-Servant Mentality
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
Elisha was a big man in his own right being a mechanized farmer with no less than 12 animal tractors being the most advanced at the time (1Kg.19v19). But he had a mentality of a servant when it comes to things of the kingdom. Despite the success he had enjoyed in the secular sector, he brought the mentality of a servant into the kingdom. Brethren, success in the kingdom of God as a Christian must and can only be modelled after that of Christ who declared in unequivocal terms in Lk.22v27 as follows:
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
This no doubt was the attribute of the apostles of old, who left their all to follow Jesus. I have heard people who talked of Jesus as not having aeroplane and the disciples declaring that gold and silver, they had none. That on the surface appears as being correct statements of fact but really contradicts the truth. The truth is that Jesus’ ministry was never one in lack. When faced with thousands of hungry men, they never called for offering or deliberated on how to raise money but rather where to buy bread. The bible says in Mk.6v37 as follows:
He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
In Jn.6v5, the bible on the same subject says as follows:
When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
Further to the above, it is established that Jesus ran a ministry that had a thief as the treasurer in person of Judas (Jn.12v6). With regards to the apostles, many of them had flourishing businesses they were doing before choosing to follow Jesus with everything that they had. Peter that is often quoted was the veteran fisherman that gave Jesus his ship to use in Lk.5. Mathew was a top-ranking custom officer (Mk.2v14). The reality is that just like Elisha, they left all to follow their master. As believers, our greatest achievement can only be hearing the voice of the master saying to us “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Mt.25v21)
ii. 2Kg.7v1-Man of Faith
The scripture referenced above says as follows:
Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord, tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.
Elisha was a man of great faith both in his request and also in his response. For instance, he believed he could get from Elijah what the latter did not even have (2Kg.2v9-10). This was further revealed when he declared 24 hours end to a very bad and unprecedented famine in world history. This was bad to the extent that women had embarked on mission conceived impossible but recorded in 2Kg.6v29 as follows:
So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.
It was by all ramifications and standards impossible for there to be a turnaround in just 24 hours given the severity of the famine, but God showed up for him but God showed up for him being a man of faith. 2Kg.7v18 says as follows:
And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria.
Faith is virtually the spiritual lens for seeing the invisible God at work (Heb.11v27).
