Under the pulse of the tide... โจ Have they already discovered who they are?
Out there, the crown's frigates continue to measure their strength with cannon fire; the wind brings the dull rumble of gunpowder, a hollow thunder that makes one's teeth vibrate and shakes the water to its deepest roots.
But here, the tide bites the sand with a muted, clean fury.
She saw him from afar. Walking with short steps and her senses on high alert, searching for remains of the shipwreck that the undertow always leaves on these godforsaken beaches, when she stopped dead in her tracks. The air caught in the middle of her chest.
There he was.
He lay face up on the bleak shoreline, the tide lapping at his worn leather boots and the loose ends of his rigging. The captain. The man whose name colonial governors pronounced with bile in their mouths, and whom merchant fleets avoided like a curse. He looked like a god overthrown by his own pride; a dark-skinned warrior, hardened by sea spray and the iron of boarding battles, with broad shoulders and a chest rising and falling in a slow, heavy rhythm that smelled of danger and triumph.
When the man opened his eyes, the midday light seemed to shatter against his pupils. They were almond-colored, dark and sharp, fixed on her with an intensity that burned her shame to ashes. There was no greeting, no surprise. Only the recognition of two forces colliding in the midst of the storm. She felt her known world splinter beneath her feet and knew, with a cold, absolute certainty that ran down her spine, that if the undertow that had returned him to this beach decided to sn**ch him away again, the ocean would not take him alone.
Night crept into the cave, dragging the scent of wild vegetation and the smoke of green firewood. Outside, the storm roared against the cliffs like a cornered animal; inside, time stopped in a narrow, feverish pulse.
That pirate of indomitable soul, the very one who split ships in half with a roar, proved to have the patience of a goldsmith in his hands. With a delicacy bordering on the sacred, his palmsโrough and hardened by the helmโbegan to trace her slowly, unbuttoning her fears one by one, shedding her shyness like someone parting the petals of a wild flower in the dark.
There was no rush, only the discovery of a new language made of skin and catching breaths. He led her by the hand down paths where vertigo turned into tenderness, and with every touch of his fingersโstrong, protective, almost devoutโshe felt as if she were touching the sky with her fingertips. Outside, the world continued to tear itself apart in useless wars; but at the bottom of that stone crevice, the entire universe fit into the echo of their names and the restless swaying of the tide.
๐ฌ The tension in that cave is absolute... This illustration hides a tribute to two of the most legendary characters in classic adventure and romance literature. Can you guess who they are based on the clues in the text? Let me know in the comments below! ๐โค๏ธ
