“Off The Record” is collaborative, freely improvisational but still totally bangin’ quartet of EP’s featuring some of my favourite players (guitarist Jeff Parker and Tubaist Theon Cross) of recent years, showcasing againChicago’s hotbed of new and generational talent. Like fellow contemporary drummer bandleaders Karriem Riggins and Yusef Dayes, Makaya McCraven takes major inspiration from hip hop, playing some of the dopest, tightest, dustiest hypnotic loops and breaks you’ll hear this side of Steve Reich and J Dilla. A major record from a composer whose work never fails to be essential.
