November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, it’s a timely reminder that men’s health includes mental wellbeing and that it’s a year round issue; an ongoing concern we all should be more aware of.

Many men experience emotional challenges that are often overlooked or misunderstood. Remarks about men “getting grumpy” as they age can dismiss some struggles they may face — including grief, loneliness, a massive sense of loss or health challenges they won’t talk about. We have to remember everyone can struggle, everyone reacts differently, but men have a tendency to bottle it up.

Equality in mental health means acknowledging that everyone’s emotions are just as valid and deserving of care as anyone else’s. Misandry and stereotypes that label men as unemotional or detached only make it harder for them to heal. Unhelpful comments like ‘man up’, ‘grow a set’, ‘snap out of it’, ‘move on’, or ‘get a life’ amongst others, certainly don’t help because they elevate that feeling of failure, of inadequacy.

Men’s Health Awareness Month reminds us that compassion, understanding, and open conversation can help everyone process emotions and reconnect with the people and things that once gave their life meaning and can do once again.

Be aware, Be compassionate, Be there to encourage him to talk and for you to listen.

Review: Marjorie’s Dead

Based on a chilling true story from 1705 in Ireland, Marjorie’s Dead blends fact, folklore, and suspense.

You arrive for the wake and leave 65 minutes later having seen death, drama, grave robbers, grieving, a marriage that wasn’t what it seemed, a plan to escape and a few twists and turns.

A young woman named Marjorie McCall was buried in Shankill Graveyard, Lurgan after a sudden illness. Her husband, John McCall, a young doctor, was baffled why he couldn’t save her. It all happened so quickly.

The story is still relevant today as Marjorie, a free spirit, who loves forests, day dreaming, freedom, marries and he isn’t who he seemed. She needs to escape. A plan is hatched and the story unfolds with some devastating consequences.

There are jumps, humour, grieving and deception in this retelling of one of Lurgan’s most infamous legends.

It captured my imagination, because I’m currently researching my own family ancestry and uncovering a story like this would be exciting.

3 night run by thedarkforesttheatre has just finished at The Grand Opera House, Belfast ….. come back soon please folks!. We’d love to see this and the super cast of 3 again… they added some great humour for our arrival and strong convincing performances.

REVIEW: Denouement

A couple are waiting for the apocalypse – Liam is finishing a memoir that won’t be read or survive, Edel is trying to contact their grown-up children. They do a bit of coke. Drugs were found in a crashed van. Death waits outside their heavily locked back door. They argue, come together, argue again. It’s about looking at your life in the final scene and finding some meaning.

🎭 Richly comic dystopian drama
