Chestnuts, what are they for?

No one knows for sure, but chestnuts are considered a vestigial structure—a leftover from early ancestors of modern horses. One theory suggests they may be remnants of extra toes from prehistoric horses.

Thought it was worth a share!

Considering this guys feet were smashed up pretty bad I wasn’t unhappy with the end result.

A common question with regard to the fitting of the shoes is why so far back. There are a number of mechanical factors but this particular horse is a chronic laminitic so the excess toe has been caused by a stretching of the laminae. Setting the shoe back restores the geometric properties of the hoof and eases pressure off the back part by shoeing around the centre of rotation of the distal joint.

FYI that’s as simple as I can describe it but it’s a very complex biomechanical structure where there are lots of variables.

I pick up the foot and say to myself “how the f**k am I gonna get a shoe on that!”

It does take a great amount of skill to secure a shot to a broken up hoof safely.

Imagine the hoof wall is like your fingernail and we all know how uncomfortable a splinter can be. Well; if we go the wrong side of the white line…that’s what it’s like for the horses!!

This is and will never not be precision work! 💅

Okay the noise isn’t great, working on farms is a matter of being respectful and sometimes sucking it up. For my clients to be able to keep their horses on a farm it means the working farmer has to compromise his space. Sure he gets extra money but I’m sure having to share this space with horses isn’t something they would choose if they had the option.

I think it’s important to recognise this and I for o e an greatful for farms that allow horses to livery there so I do my upmost to slow that gratitude to the farm owners.

FYI: it’s the JCB getting washed what you can hear. I’m not 💯 why it has to be running but it was.

Trying to hold nails with these gloves on is near impossible, it makes them so slippery!!

Horses CAN have cushioned insoles too! 😏

The is a great set up and having the DIM under the pad not only absorbs concussion but it prevents dirt getting trapped under the pad causing bruising.

I hope your Monday wasn’t blue like mine! 😅

In case anyone is wondering, it’s from the CS powder under the DIM that stops the hoof from rotting under the pad and shoe.

An this is where I love; sorry I meant live! 😜 a perfect way to spend my days off in the sun!!
