Been reflecting on last Saturday's Devon Youth Council event - really powerful hearing young people talk about what they actually need. (That's me with the cheesy grin in the photo! 3rd row up 5th person in😊)

We were lucky to be invited, and the clarity was striking. Young people kept saying the same things: safe spaces where they can just be, different creative things to try, and people who'll actually listen.
Which is pretty much what we've been trying to work out how to do properly for three years now.

What's happening next:

Creative Media Social launches 10th January at Barnstaple Library - came through the Places To Go Things To Do fund that Devon Youth Council had a say in. It's designed around what young people have been telling us: offer varied activities, make it feel safe, let them explore at their own pace.

We've joined the co-production group on diversity and inclusion too. Our approach is quite specific - we bring professional creative equipment (podcasting, video, photography, animation, social media, music kit) to venues young people already feel comfortable in.

Seems to work well for people who find their voice better when there's no pressure to perform.

Turns out when you actually listen to what young people say they need, you can build something that might actually work for them.

Devon Youth Council’s biggest event of the year was a huge success!! 🥳

Following on from our annual youth vote earlier this year, the Devon Youth Council has been hard at work researching the number one issue for young people in Devon: Places to Go, Things to Do.

This Saturday, the Devon Youth Council – along with guests from Space Youth Services, Barnstaple Town Youth Council, and Sidmouth College School Council – presented their research, personal experiences, and positive examples of successful community initiatives to over 40 local councillors and other decision makers!

As a result of the day, the Devon Youth Council hopes to launch four new co-production groups on:
🫂 Promoting a culture of inclusion in Devon which includes safe spaces for young people
🚌 Exploring what we might be able to do with transport costs for young people
🌐 Creating a web-based directory of all activities for young people in Devon
🤝 And working with Space Youth Services to consider an offer for 18- to 25-year-olds

One councillor said: 💬 “Hearing views of the Youth Council members was so important, and I am certainly considering how I can further engage young people in my local area.”

It was such a successful day, where so many young people spoke bravely about their personal experiences and expressed young people’s need for change and communication! Huge well done and thank you to everyone who got involved!

🎉 What an incredible showcase!
Our Young Voices Heritage™ event at Bideford Library exceeded all expectations. The professional recognition we received was genuinely moving.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) said it perfectly:
"The young people were the crucial key component that made the event so interesting."

✨ Freya (age 10) managing sound engineering like a pro
✨ Fire's wisdom: "Be Kind - Treat them like you like to be treated"
✨ Physical hugs from heritage professionals celebrating our young people
✨ Stakeholders travelling specifically to see what we've achieved
(aliases used for social media)

The transformation has been remarkable: 100% of participants report increased social connections. These sessions became "the highlight of their week."

One participant already progressed from attendee → volunteer → moving toward employment.

My story getting here (the short version)

In August ‘18, I left my job after 5 years of service in a large medical organisation. I was tired, burned out and felt I was not doing what I was meant to be doing in this lifetime.

I pressed the ‘reset’ button!

I took a caravan and left for Devon! After freaking out having nothing to do and literally forcing myself to uncomfortably do nothing, I finally remembered my purpose, who I was, what brings me joy, all the work I had done at university, all the research thereafter, and the sadness of it all still gathering dust in my hard drive.

After some ‘fear of the unknown’ and ‘I can’t possibly do it’ thoughts, I finally realised I had no choice but to get on with it; there was a spark driving me inside, a little voice that just got louder, saying, “if you don’t do it now you will never do it!”
