LIONFISH — BEAUTIFUL BUT SERIOUSLY ARMED

One of the most beautiful fish you can encounter underwater, but definitely one you want to admire rather than touch. Those impressive fins are lined with venomous spines, making the lionfish a perfect example of how the reef can be both stunning and dangerous.

I filmed this one up close while diving and it was completely unbothered by having a camera in its face. Another incredible encounter from beneath the surface.

OCTOPUS ON THE HUNT

One of those moments underwater that you could watch for hours. I came across this octopus hunting along the reef, moving slowly and deliberately before suddenly making its move.

Watching an octopus hunt is incredible. The way it changes colour, shape and texture while stalking its prey is like watching an alien hunting in plain sight.

I was lucky enough to capture the whole thing while diving, and these are the moments I love sharing — real encounters, filmed by me, exactly as they happened.

CLEANER WRASSE WHEN THE TASK REQUIRES EXACTLY ZERO CLEANER WRASSE.

I was trying to launch my SMB while filming myself when this persistent little cleaner wrasse decided I clearly needed a full service.

It kept swimming around my face and trying to clean my ears while I was trying to get the SMB up. Apparently, underwater ear cleaning was more important than whatever I was doing.

You have to love the confidence of a cleaner wrasse. If you have ears, you're getting cleaned.

THE PINNACLES — AUSTRALIA’S OTHERWORLDLY DESERT

I’ve seen some pretty incredible places around the world, but The Pinnacles in Western Australia are something completely different.

Standing in the middle of this massive desert, surrounded by thousands of ancient limestone pillars rising out of the yellow sand, it honestly feels like you’ve landed on another planet.

The Pinnacles were formed over thousands of years through a combination of natural processes, with groundwater, shells, sand and erosion slowly creating these strange limestone formations. Some are only a few centimetres tall while others rise several metres above the desert floor.

What makes it even crazier is the sheer number of them. You can walk or drive through the Pinnacles Desert and everywhere you look there are these bizarre stone formations scattered across the landscape.

I spent some time filming here and trying to capture just how surreal this place really is. Photos don’t quite do it justice — you need to actually stand amongst them to appreciate the scale and atmosphere.

Western Australia never seems to run out of places that make you stop and think… how the hell did nature create this?

OCTOPUS ON THE HUNT

I was filming this octopus hunting across the reef when a whole bunch of little fish started following her around, waiting to grab whatever she stirred up.

Watching her hunt was incredible. She changed colour, changed shape and disappeared into the reef right in front of me as she searched for her next meal.

One of those underwater moments you can watch over and over again and still not believe what you just saw.

THIS TURTLE ALMOST BIT HER!

We were standing in the shallow water at Monkey Mia in Australia when this green turtle decided to swim right up to us.

It came ridiculously close and almost took a bite out of one of the people standing there. I don't think she was expecting that!

Just another day in Australia when the wildlife decides to come and say hello.

FLYING GURNARD

This has to be one of the strangest looking fish I come across underwater.

The flying gurnard uses those huge pectoral fins to glide across the bottom, and when it spreads them out it looks like it’s about to take off.

It doesn’t actually fly, but watching one move across the sand with those massive fins fully opened is pretty damn impressive.

Another seriously cool creature I get to see while diving.

SAND TIGER SHARK UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

I got closer to this Sand Tiger Shark’s teeth than its dentist does...

One of the most intimidating looking sharks in the ocean, but seeing one this close is absolutely incredible. Those teeth might look terrifying, but this was one seriously cool encounter.

MASSIVE MORAY EEL BATTLE!

I was filming a massive Javanese moray eel when it started using its tail to push another eel out from underneath a flat rock.

Then things got seriously crazy...

As the smaller eel’s tail came out, the Javanese moray grabbed it and an absolutely insane struggle followed. The smaller eel eventually managed to escape — but not before losing a large section of its tail.

I’ve seen plenty of crazy things underwater, but watching two moray eels battle like this was something else entirely.

The ocean never stops surprising me.
