This practice, known as “wife selling,” occurred mostly in 18th and 19th century England as an informal way to end unhappy marriages, since legal divorce was extremely expensive and inaccessible for ordinary people. It was not officially legal, but it still happened publicly at markets and fairs. Many women were “sold” with a rope or halter around their neck or waist, often for a small amount of money or alcohol.
