🐾 One of the top highlights in our diary always lands at year-end - attending the Televisual Bulldog Awards Winners’ Dinner. Harvey Mash and Jo Lawlor gave our 2025 Bulldog Award for Best Drama One-Off or Serial this year to Jo Johnson (Producer) and Sian Wilson (Make-Up Designer), for the extraordinary ‘Adolescence’ from Netflix, Warp Films, Matriarch Productions, and Plan B Entertainment 870.

Congratulations also to all the other winners and nominees, and thanks as always (and in perpetuity) to James Bennett and the TELEVISUAL MEDIA UK LIMITED team for hosting another beautiful evening for everyone in the fabulous golden splendour of the Pompadour Ballroom, Hotel Café Royal in London.

🏆 And the winner is… 𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞! 🏆

What a line-up in our sponsored category at this year’s Televisual Bulldog Awards 2025 - Best Drama One-Off or Serial. With Rivals coming second and Kaos third, it was an incredibly tough call.

𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 ultimately took the top spot – it pushes form and storytelling, using extended continuous takes, a bold real-time structure and an unflinching portrayal of a family under extreme pressure. It’s a piece of television that is technically daring, emotionally raw, vitally important and haunting; it has stayed with us – and with everyone who has seen it – long after the final frame. Extraordinary.

Huge congratulations to , , , Plan B Entertainment 870, and to the entire team behind the show on a thoroughly well-deserved win – and to all of this year’s nominees and winners. What an incredible showcase of the strength and ambition of UK television drama.

Lloyd has headed up our security team for the past five years and is the first and last face most people see on site each day (until the night shift kicks in!). Everyone here knows and loves him – he’s always on hand to help throughout the day, whatever it brings.

✨ Weekly round-up! ✨ It’s been a busy week across the industry - here’s what we’ve been up to...

💫 At Screen’s Stars of Tomorrow 2025, Screen / ScreenDaily unveiled its latest showcase of rising talent from across the UK & Ireland, spanning performance, writing, directing and producing. It was great to catch up with Paul Hillier from Tysers, and huge thanks to the team for having us along and curating such a brilliant cohort of 20 Stars. We can’t wait to see what they go on to create – and to hopefully support many of their productions at Bovingdon Airfield Studios.

We’ve already had one of this year’s Stars - Finn Bennett - film here when he was cast in Alex Garland’s Warfare (A24/DNA), released earlier this year and shot entirely with us.

🏛️ At the Networking, we caught up with many studio and industry friends in the stunning Freemasons’ Hall – lovely to reconnect with everyone after the summer and in such a beautiful venue.

🍽️ We were also guests at the Big Business Lunch – huge thanks to James Thomas of for the invite. Qdos supports us with vital infrastructure projects here at Bovingdon and are one of our most valued partners.

The Conjuring: Last Rites, filmed at Bovingdon Airfield Studios, has been phenomenally successful since its release in cinemas worldwide, and we loved seeing it - while being terrified - at the cast-and-crew screening.

It’s enjoyed a record-breaking debut, with the biggest global opening weekend ever for a horror film*. What an achievement! 👏

Based on the real 1980s Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania, the story introduces an adult Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson) and her fiancé, Tony (Ben Hardy – who returned to Bovingdon having played Roger Taylor in Bohemian Rhapsody – also filmed with us).

It was really lovely to catch up with Steven Harding and Erin Duffy - and a real treat to watch it alongside them and the entire crew who conjured the Warrens’ final haunting!

Great to see ITV Studios Bovingdon feature in this Summer’s issue of Televisual magazine! ITV Studios has their very own huge purpose-built filming stage and extensive production offices based with us here at Bovingdon Airfield Studios – available for hire by any production. In case you need a reintroduction:

🎥 ITV’s sound stage is a massive 22,483 ft² and has:
📐 An unusually generous clearance height – 55 ft!
🏗️ A concrete floor pad capable of bearing significant load
🎯 An extremely high-spec mother truss system
🛣️ Plenty of hardstanding runway in front and behind the sound stage - ‘ITV Runway’!
🏢 Extensive production offices including rooms of many sizes, dressing rooms, and hair and make-up facilities
🔌 All the power and super-fast internet a production could need

As mentioned by Televisual: “the infrastructure is purpose-built for the demands of large-scale entertainment”, and is also perfect for feature films. Some productions made there include:

🎡 BBC’s ‘The Wheel’ – with its impressive 360° raised set – plus other large-scale TV shows with live audiences such as ‘Dancing on Ice’
🚂 Sky TV’s ‘This is Christmas’ – fitting two full-size train carriages and a dramatic video wall inside the stage
⛪ Amazon’s ‘The Power’ – for which a full-scale chapel was built inside
🌟 ITV’s ‘Starstruck’ – by Remarkable, for two series
🎤 Band music rehearsals and tour testing – including Pulp for their recent tour
👥 Large-scale crowd basing

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of Live Aid! For anyone who missed it last year, we wrote about how, back in 2017, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody - starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury - constructed a full-scale replica of the original Wembley Stadium Live Aid stage on the Main Runway at Bovingdon, in a collaboration between Bovingdon Airfield Studios and our neighbour Cathy Leahy.

Recreating the Live Aid concert was one of the film’s most iconic achievements, expertly capturing the essence of Queen’s legendary performance. The production team meticulously reproduced the 1985 event here at Bovingdon, paying attention to every detail – right down to the Pepsi cups on the piano. Malek and the other actors performed the entire set list multiple times to ensure authenticity, perfectly mimicking all the movements, energy, stage presence and choreography from the original footage. Brian May, Roger Taylor, and even Bob Geldof visited the set to help ensure everything was as true to reality as possible.

Scouting for the Live Aid location was a complex task for the Bohemian Rhapsody locations department. Ultimately, Bovingdon was the only site with the necessary scale and sufficient hardstanding surface to build the stage, install the supporting infrastructure for lighting and cranes, and accommodate the 800 extras required for the crowd scenes. The stage and foreground scenes were all real, while extensive visual effects brought the rest of the arena and the depth of the crowds to life.

Malek’s preparation for the role was extensive, involving movement coaching to learn exactly how to replicate Mercury’s distinctive mannerisms, dental prosthetics, and dialect coaching to master Mercury’s unique accent. Malek even performed some of the singing himself, although most of the film’s vocals are a careful blend of Malek, actual Mercury recordings, and Canadian singer Marc Martel. This rigorous attention to detail was essential in bringing Mercury’s character to life on screen, leading to widespread acclaim for Malek’s performance and earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor.
