The 3 main types of product photos for social media (and when to use them) 📸

1. Plain - purely functional and shows the product for what it is
- Showing all angles, essential features and details etc without frills
- Closely replicates what the product looks like in-person
- More common in product listings on website (sometimes used to announce products on social media)

2. Action - demonstrate how the product is to be used in its intended situation
- Showing how something buckles, functions, unties etc
- Focuses on the functionality of the product
- Used on product listings and on social media for explanations

3. Lifestyle/display - show the product in a mock environment
- Styled scenes where the product is amongst things that add to its overall aesthetic
- Can lean more towards realism or shop-like displays
- Perfect for social media and thumbnails on website listings to catch people’s eye and show who the product appeals to

Content ideas for: secondhand clothes shops 👠

1 item, 4 outfits
Use one item of clothing or an accessory and make four distinct different outfits out of it. This can help people to visualise how the item would work better in their wardrobe. Works great as a carousel or video.

What I wear to…
Make up some outfits that clearly aren’t what someone would usually wear to do something like go to the supermarket or pick the kids up from school. Have some fun with it and incorporate some wacky combinations. Not only is this more interesting than a regular outfit video, it gives people a chance to see your less “wearable” pieces. Works as either a carousel or a video.

Mistakes you’re probably making in your outfits
Turn common fashion “mistakes” on their head and make outfits that embrace them. Think of stuff like “red and pink clash” or not wearing two types of animal print together. The best part is that if they’re divisive and people still dislike them, you’re likely to get engagement from that too! Works as a carousel too, but the impact would be be better through a video

Fashion terms you should know
Describe common cuts, fabrics and patterns that people often get mixed up or don’t know the name of. For example, latex and PVC or damask and brocade. This not only shows your knowledge, it demonstrates that you’re open to newbies in fashion and won’t exclude them! Even better if you have examples with you to show. Works well as a video in the case that you might have to explain more than what carousels allow.

If you haven’t reached the end of the day and realised that you forgot to film, are you even a business-owner? 😂

Listen, it even happens to me sometimes and I’m meant to be the social media pro 🙈

I feel like I see these horrendous posters everywhere, especially in local groups 😵‍💫

I’m sure other designers would agree with me, but I’d much rather see something scribbled on a bit of paper than these soulless things! It really cheapens your brand and signals to others that your event isn’t worth going to as the creator doesn’t even want to invest in it

I get that there are financial restraints, but with the amount of free templates out there, it’s not like hiring a designer is the only option! 🎨

How to prevent a brand scandal on social media 🗞️🙊

Making a mistake on social media is almost inevitable, it’s how you handle it that really matters. People remember how you responded to backlash and can quickly choose not to support your business if they see you as someone who doesn’t deserve it.

However, there are a few things that you can do that can “controversy” being a suggested term alongside searching your brand:

Do ✅
• Attempt to resolve the issue
• Take accountability and keep the conversation open
• Remain respectful
• Release a statement as soon as you can, from the founder and anyone else involved
• Keep any evidence of correspondence

Don’t ❌
• Use AI to write a script or statement
• “Clap back” or try to make witty remarks
• Delete negative comments or turn off commenting altogether
• Block anyone giving critiques or constructive criticism
• Release statements on where people won’t see it
• Blame it on the “intern”

These are things I’ve personally witnessed from brands in the past, both big and small. However it’s always best to consult with a PR specialist if you’re unsure of how to handle something!
