A pensioner has won a lengthy battle against a water company after being charged for his neighbour’s water bill for six years.

Ralph Wallis, who goes by Simon, lives in a flat in Sutton Avenue in Peacehaven with his wife, Annick.

After moving in seven years ago, the couple quickly noticed that their water bill seemed abnormally high, especially when compared with friends.

Simon, who is an army veteran and cancer survivor, prevailed on the company to send another engineer to their home who discovered the problem - their water bill meters had crossed over.

“He said ‘you’re paying for your neighbour’, Simon said. “Then he said, ‘and it’s even worse, when you have no tap turned on, the metre is still clocking up’.

"To add insult to injury, the neighbour had a leak.”
