The badge Helped save the bulldog breed

That’s a badge from The London Bull Dog Society, founded in 1875. It was the first group to write and publish an official Standard of Perfection for the English Bulldog. Before that, there was no consistent “type” - just dogs bred for bull-baiting and fighting.

When bull-baiting was banned in 1835, the breed nearly died out. The society saved it by turning the bulldog into a show dog with a clear standard: stocky, wrinkled, low to the ground, with that unmistakable stubborn face. Every English Bulldog today traces back to that 1875 standard.

This 150-year-old badge saved a breed from extinction 🐶🇬🇧

Meet the badge of The London Bull Dog Society, est. 1875.

Before this group existed, the English Bulldog was a fighting dog with no standard. When bull-baiting was banned in 1835, the breed started disappearing.

In 1875, these fanciers wrote the first official “Standard of Perfection”. They decided what a true British Bulldog should look like and act like. Stocky. Wrinkled. Fearless. Loyal.

That standard is why you can still recognize a Bulldog today.
It’s why Churchill was called “The British Bulldog” in WWII.
It’s why this dog became a symbol of British grit worldwide.

Without this badge, without this society, the breed you know and love might not exist.

Question: Did you know the Bulldog almost went extinct? What’s your favorite thing about the breed? 👇

This is why the English Bulldog is called “Britain’s dog” 🇬🇧🐶

Most people see a wrinkled face and think “cute.”

But for 200 years, this dog has been the face of British grit.

During WWII, Churchill was nicknamed “The British Bulldog.”
Sailors got bulldog tattoos before heading into battle.
And ceramic bulldogs were made to boost morale on kitchen shelves across the UK.

I’ve spent 13 years collecting 1000+ pieces of bulldog history - from 1913 Kennel Club rulebooks to wartime Crown Devon figurines. It’s now the world’s largest private English Bulldog collection.

Each piece tells the same story: stubborn, loyal, unbreakable.

If you’re proud to be British, or just love dogs with character, follow along. I post a new piece of history every week.

What’s your first memory of an English Bulldog? 👇

Why this relates to
Strong hook - “Britain’s dog” + flag emoji grabs attention fast

Story + history - connects Churchill, WWII, and everyday UK life. People share what makes them feel proud

Credibility - “world’s largest private collection” makes it worth following
CTA + question - “What’s your first memory” drives comments, which boosts reach

Hashtags - Mix of broad and niche so both new and existing fans find you

He won this 112 years ago... and it’s still here.

This medal was struck in 1913.
Engraved in bronze: “Awarded to Th Mishmase – L.K.A.I De-Show”.

I keep thinking about the day it was handed over.

Maybe it was a rainy morning in London. A crowd gathered, mud on their boots, breath visible in the cold air.
A handler, nervous, holding the leash of Th Mishmase - a champion dog whose name is now lost to time except for this engraving.

The judge raises the medal. The laurel wreath catches the light. Applause. Pride.
A moment that mattered enough to be cast in metal forever.

Fast forward 112 years.
Wars were fought. Empires fell. Families came and went.
But this little piece of bronze survived.

Now it sits in my hand. A whisper from 1913 saying: “I was here. I won. Remember me.”

Some things aren’t just collectibles. They’re memories that refused to die.

What do you think happened to Th Mishmase? 👇
