🎸 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE ARCHITECT OF GRUNGE!
Today at Northern Rocks Radio, we are cranking the volume to 11 to celebrate the man, the myth, and the master of the "harmonies from hell"—Jerry Cantrell!

Born on this day in 1966, Jerry didn’t just join a scene; he helped define an entire era of music as the founder, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter for Alice in Chains. While the 90s were full of great riffs, Jerry’s signature sludgy, down-tuned style and haunting vocal interplay (first with Layne Staley and later with William DuVall) created a sound that was—and still is—utterly untouchable.

# # # More Than Just a Riff Machine
Jerry’s influence stretches far beyond the Seattle rain. Here are a few things you might not know about the birthday boy:
* The Songwriter’s Songwriter: He’s the pen behind timeless anthems like "Rooster," "Would?," and "Man in the Box."
* Solo Success: Beyond AIC, his solo records—from the gritty Boggy Depot to the masterpiece Degradation Trip and his recent work on Brighten—showcase a musician who never stops evolving.
* A Familiar Face on Screen: Did you catch his cameos? Jerry showed off his acting chops as a copy store clerk in the 1996 classic Jerry Maguire and appeared in the 2009 comedy Rock Slyde.
🤘 Let’s Settle It: The Ultimate AIC Track
Whether it’s the acoustic haunting of Jar of Flies or the heavy-hitting power of Dirt, Jerry Cantrell’s fingerprints are on some of the greatest music ever recorded.
What is your absolute favorite Jerry Cantrell riff or Alice in Chains song? Drop it in the comments and let’s show Jerry some love! 👇

🎸 ON THIS DAY IN ROCK HISTORY 🎸

We’re raising our glasses to a true legend of British blues rock, Terence 'Snowy' White, who was born on this day, 3rd March 1948!

Snowy is one of those guitarists whose playing you’ve definitely heard, even if you don’t know the name—yet his distinctive, soulful touch has graced some of the biggest names in music history. With a Fender Stratocaster in hand, his journey took him from the blues clubs to the stadiums of the world.

He famously toured with the legendary Thin Lizzy during their peak years, adding his soaring solos to the twin-guitar attack. Before that, he was a session musician who found himself as a touring member of the mighty Pink Floyd during their Animals and The Wall era, even contributing to the film. He later reunited with Roger Waters, becoming a key part of his solo band for decades.

But Snowy wasn't just a sideman. As a solo artist, he gifted us one of the most beautiful and timeless instrumentals of the 80s. In 1983, his track 'Bird Of Paradise' flew high into the UK Top 10, a piece of music so atmospheric and moving that it remains a staple on radio (especially here at Northern Rocks!) to this day.

So, from all of us at Northern Rocks Radio, a very happy birthday to the man with the coolest nickname in rock, the master of the melodic solo—Terence 'Snowy' White! 🎂🎸

What's your favourite Snowy White moment? Is it his work with Floyd, Lizzy, or that iconic solo hit? Let us know in the comments! 👇

🎶 Born on This Day in Rock History! 🎶

Join us at Northern Rocks Radio as we celebrate the birthday of a true rock legend—Roger Daltrey! Born on March 1, 1944, this iconic English singer and actor is best known as the powerful frontman of one of the greatest rock bands of all time: The Who. 🎸

With a career spanning over six decades, Daltrey’s unmistakable voice and electrifying stage presence helped define a generation. The Who stormed the charts with their debut iconic anthem “My Generation” (1965), which became a rallying cry for youth rebellion and reached No. 2 in the UK. From there, the band went on to score over 20 UK hit singles and 16 US Top 40 hits, leaving an indelible mark on the music world.

But their impact didn’t stop at singles. The Who redefined what a rock album could be with groundbreaking rock operas like Tommy and Quadrophenia—masterpieces that blended storytelling, complex instrumentation, and raw emotion.

Daltrey also found success as a solo artist, with his 1973 hit “Giving It All Away” reaching No. 5 in the UK. Beyond music, he’s made his mark as an actor and continues to be a passionate advocate for music and the arts.

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, The Who are widely regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century. Their legacy has been honoured time and again, including receiving the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 2008 and the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement at UCLA in 2016, shared with his longtime songwriting partner Pete Townshend.

So today, we raise our voices and our volume k***s to Roger Daltrey—a true rock pioneer! 🎤⚡

Tune in to Northern Rocks Radio for classic tracks from The Who and more all day long!

🎵 LEGEND BORN ON THIS DAY – JOHNNY CASH 🖤

On 26th February 1932, the world welcomed the one and only "Man in Black" – Johnny Cash! 🎸

While the world may know him as a country icon, Johnny Cash was so much more than just one genre. He was a musical force of nature who tore down boundaries between country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This incredible versatility earned him a rare and prestigious triple crown: induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, AND the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Not many artists can claim that! 🏆

From the boom-chicka-boom of his signature sound with the Tennessee Three to his deep, resonant voice that spoke for the downtrodden and the rebellious, Cash’s music has left an indelible mark on the 20th century.

In the later years of his remarkable career, he introduced himself to a whole new generation. His hauntingly beautiful covers of artists like Nine Inch Nails (particularly the devastatingly powerful "Hurt") proved that his artistry had no expiration date. 🎤

Johnny Cash left us on September 12th, 2003, at the age of 71, but his legendary voice and storytelling continue to echo through the decades.

On this day in 1962, a legend was born: Cliff Burton.

He wasn't just Metallica's bassist; he was the heart, the soul, and the revolutionary force that shaped their early sound. With fingers that flew across the fretboard and a musicality that fused classical harmony with raw, thrashing power, Cliff redefined what the bass could be in heavy metal.

Tragically, the world lost him far too soon. On September 27th, 1987, the band's tour bus crashed on a rainy road in Sweden. Cliff was killed in the accident, a devastating loss that is still felt deeply in the metal community.

Today, we remember the incredible talent, the wild hair, the iconic bass solos, and the musical genius of Cliff Burton. His spirit lives on in every crushing riff of "For Whom the Bell Tolls," in the epic "Orion," and in the foundation of one of the greatest bands of all time.

Raise your horns and play it loud for Cliff. 🤘
