The Cross Stone Project

The Cross Stone Project The creation of an Armenian cross stone for Canterbury Cathedral to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Please donate: https://www.gofundme.com/canterbury-crossstone-khachkar 2018 marks the centenary of the end of World War I and as part of Canterbury Cathedral’s commemoration, a traditional Armenian cross stone will be carved and placed in the Cathedral Precincts to remember those who lost their lives, including the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Importantly, The Cross Stone Project commemorates

Randall Davidson, the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time, who became actively involved in helping the Armenians by bringing the reality of the atrocities committed against them to the fore of British politics. The cross will be made in “Tufa” limestone from Armenia and will be sculpted using traditional tools and methods by Vartan Moskofian and John Meardon, with completion planned for November 2018. In order to further mark this occasion the project will be filmed with a view to making a documentary film that will be offered to national and international television outlets. The estimated cost of the project is £25,000, which can only be funded through donations. So we are asking if you will help us make this important opportunity become a reality. Any donation would be hugely appreciated:

Armenian Khachkar

One hundred years ago the people of Armenia were subjected to a brutal genocide in Ottoman Turkey when more than 1.5 million died and many more fled their country. In Britain, though weighed down itself with the suffering and hardships of the First World War, the Archbishop of Canter- bury, Randall Davidson, championed the Armenian cause and brought this terrible event to international notice.
In commemoration of the centenary of the genocide, the Dean & Chapter of Canterbury have been offered a traditional Armenian Khachkar or stone cross in remembrance of those who died but also as a symbol for the promotion of peace through dialogue and as a visible agent for reconciliation.

The Khachkar has been carved in Canterbury by Vartan Moskofian, who is of Armenian descent, and John Meardon, the Cathedral’s former Receiver General, from a block of imported Armenian tuff stone. It stands nearly 2 meters tall and will be positioned in the Memorial Garden of the Cathedral Precincts, itself a memorial to the First World War and a fitting place for a work dedicated to commemoration and reconciliation.
