Delighted to share that I’ll be appearing at Green Man Festival next Saturday (22nd August)!

From 1.15-2pm, I’ll be chatting about how Wales conquered the 90s charts with Teresa Delfino, who has curated a brilliant literature line-up on the Babbling Tongues stage with Huw Stephens.

I’ll also be recording an interview with Lauren Laverne’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music at 4pm.

It’s 30 years since Cool Cymru including the Manics’ multi-award winning album Everything Must Go and Super Furries’ Fuzzy Logic (released on the same day in 1996!) and classic debuts from Catatonia and 60Ft Dolls. RIP Bonnie Tyler.

Born as Gaynor Hopkins on 8 June 1951, the Skewen singer finished second in a local talent contest in 1969 and was subsequently inspired to pursue a career in the music industry.

Responding to a press ad, she became a backing singer for Bobby Wayne & The Dixies before forming her own soul group Imagination, and changing her name to Sherene Davis to avoid being confused with Mary Hopkin.

In 1975, an offer of a recording contract from RCA Records came with a recommendation for another name change, and she became Bonnie Tyler after combining a list of first names and surnames compiled from a newspaper.

Within two years, Tyler found success on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to her single It’s a Heartache, and worldwide fame followed with the release of Faster than the Speed of Night in 1983. Working with iconic producer Jim Steinman, the album featured the hit title track as well as Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Straight from the Heart and Total Eclipse of the Heart, which reached No.1 in the UK and US.

Not only did the single sell over 6 million copies globally, but it was also nominated for a Grammy and topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway and South Africa.

Further success was achieved the next year with the release of Holding Out for a Hero, and she joined forces with another bestselling Welsh artist of the 80s in Shakin' Stevens on A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love).

Tyler continued to release music for the next four decades as well as representing the UK in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and being awarded a MBE in 2022.

Happy 30th Birthday to The Big 3!

After bursting out of the traps with their single Happy Shopper in 1994, fans had to another two years before 60ft Dolls’ first album arrived, but it definitely didn’t disappoint.

Recorded at Rockfield Studios with Pixies producer Al Clay, the Dolls crafted one of the greatest debuts in Welsh music history.

Armed with a clutch of raucous tunes like Talk to Me, Stay, Hair and New Loafers, the album retained all the adrenaline-soaked energy of their gigs at the legendary TJ’s venue where Newport was memorably branded the “new Seattle.”
