The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is offering safety advice to beachgoers, as the majority of its lifeguard patrols come to an end across Wales.
This Sunday (6 September 2026) marks the end of the peak season for RNLI lifeguards in Wales. The charity is offering lifesaving safety advice to people visiting the coast during the autumn and winter months.
Whilst the majority of RNLI lifeguarded beaches across Wales will have finished patrols by 6pm this Sunday, there are a handful of beaches that still have cover. In Swansea County, Langland and Caswell Bay will be patrolled every day (10am-6pm) up to and including Sunday 13 September. In Bridgend, Rest Bay will be patrolled on weekends only until 13 September and Trecco Bay will remain open on weekends only up until 27 September. In Pembrokeshire, Whitesands Beach will continue to be patrolled on weekends only up until October half-term.

The two female cats were found on Wednesday (2 September) by a driver who spotted them in a country lane in the Caerphilly area, possibly near the Bedwas.

RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Black said: "The member of the public found them in the early hours of the morning with one outside a cardboard box and the other still inside it.

"Unfortunately we do not have a specific location or any further information. We'd like to thank the driver for not leaving these poor cats there as they must have been very frightened in the dark."

Both cats - one tabby, one black and white and both aged around five - have had a check over at RSPCA Merthyr Tydfil Veterinary Clinic and are in a good condition. They have been given the names of Penny (tabby) and Cadi and are now in the care of RSPCA Wyth Sir Branch and once ready - if an owner is not found - will be rehomed.

"Both cats are healthy, but they are not microchipped, so we can't identify an owner," said Gemma.

PHOTOGRAPHS and video clips showing flooding in the area where a controversial tourist accommodation development will be built were barred from being shown to councillors.

At a meeting of Powys County Council’s Planning Committee on Thursday, September 3, councillors received a proposal by the Lewis family for six holiday lodges, a reception and office building, a toilet and shower block, as well as a septic tank and access track.

The proposal has been scaled down from the eight lodges submitted by the Lewises in 2024 and is for a field at Wern, between the villages of Arddleen and Guilsfield, to the north of Welshpool.
The area is prone to flooding, and the proposal was called before the Planning Committee by the local county councillor for the area, Ian Harrison (Conservative – Guilsfield).

COOLING systems should be considered for key areas of schools like exam halls to help pupils deal with extreme heat, a councillor said.

Cllr Sandra Joy said pragmatic, short-term options should be looked at during a discussion about guidelines for headteachers regarding potential school closures and adaptations to school buildings.

It comes on the back of a hot exam season with a heatwave in late May and then a stronger one towards the end of June.

Cllr Joy and fellow Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Day had asked the Labour administration in writing what discussions had been taking place with headteachers to ensure there were clear guidelines to steer decisions to partially or completely close a school during extreme heat, what support there was to ensure minimum disruption, and what adaptations were being made to school buildings that were under construction or being modified to mitigate against the worst effects of more frequent high temperatures.

MARKET traders in Llanelli are worried about operating on the second floor of a proposed new building, according to a letter, and want clarification about the levels of reported support from among their ranks.

A letter from a fruit and veg business owner at the current indoor market to a group of councillors sets out concerns but stressed the “multiple” stallholders it spoke for wanted a successful development.

Carmarthenshire Council is planning to relocate the market from Market Hall, by St Elli Shopping Centre, because the building is nearing the end of its life to a new development on Vaughan Street with 14 ground-floor shops and 80 market stalls on the floor above. It said there has been and would continue to be extensive engagement with traders.

PLANS for luxury holiday cabins at a rural location near Newtown have been given the thumbs up by Powys councillors.

Earlier this year, Kidderminster-based Tyler Richards lodged a planning application with Powys County Council for four one-bedroom holiday cabins, a new access, a package treatment plant and all associated works on land south of Bwlch-y-Ffridd.

The plans were brought before Powys County Council’s Planning Committee at a meeting on Thursday, September 3.

Planning officer Rhian Griffiths told councillors that she recommended they approve the scheme.

There have been fears that the cabins will be used for hen and stag parties and disturb residents, with several objectors speaking at the meeting.

Objector and Aberhafesp community councillor Richard Amy explained that the proposal had been discussed at a community council meeting, where residents had raised their concerns about it.

Fresh plans have been submitted for a new ‘traveller site’ on the outskirts of a Pembrokeshire seaside village, which had been twice refused by the national park and was due to face enforcement action.

At the start of this year a scheme previously refused in 2025 for the creation of a traveller site of one static caravan, one touring caravan, day/utility room and ecological enhancements (partly retrospective) on land at Froghall Yard, Moreton Lane, Saundersfoot was again turned down.

Nearly 300 people had signed a petition against the scheme and the objection to the application by David ‘Dai’ Evans of Pontypool, through agents Hayston Developments & Planning Ltd, was also shared by Saundersfoot’s community council.

A supporting statement accompanying the application stated the applicant belongs to a long-standing Romany Gypsy family, currently at an overcrowded Traveller site in Pontypool.

A Grade II* listed Gwynedd house where David Lloyd George spent his final days is set to undergo preservation work.

Restoration work is planned at Ty Newydd, the property where the former prime minister passed away.

The politician bought the property in Llanystumdwy, the village where he spent his childhood, in 1939 for his retirement.

He died in its library on March 26, 1945, after a short illness.

The home is also connected to the creator of the Italianate village, Portmeirion, Clough Williams-Ellis.

The architect remodelled the property for the former prime minister and his wife in the 1940s.

Today, Ty Newydd attracts famous faces from the literary world, in its most recent guise as the National Writing Centre for Wales, run by Literature Wales.

Around 160 Wrexham residents concerned about the long-term effect of toxic waste dumping highlighted in a recent BBC documentary have come together to demand action.

At a meeting on Wednesday night members of the community living near Llwyneinion, Ruabon, Cefn Mawr, Trevor and Acrefair spoke with Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr MP Steve Witherden, community councillors and legal representatives.

They wanted to know how the data revealed in Michael Sheen’s Buried documentary on forever chemicals could be used to get companies which knowingly dumped dangerous chemicals with long-term health impacts in their communities to clean up their mess.

The documentary focused on the historic dumping of chemicals including Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) – a known carcinogen which is slow to break down and poisons its environment – carried out by Monsanto in these areas from 1950 to 1980.

Three officers at Swansea Council have helped save taxpayers an estimated £1.2m by investigating fraud and overpayments.

The trio’s presence also has a significant deterrent value, a council report said.
The counter-fraud team, known as fraud function, investigates things like council tax reduction, social housing tenancy, and Blue Badge parking fraud.

They also do special investigations, fraud awareness work, and employee-related investigations. Part of the work is in tandem with bodies such as the Department for Work and Pensions and South Wales Police.

Their work over the past 12 months was discussed at a council governance and audit committee meeting where chair Paula O’Connor praised their impact despite having just three staff. “The counter-fraud team is doing a tremendous job,” she said.

In 2025-26 the team helped recover £480,980.8p of overpayments – mainly in welfare benefits and housing benefit – compared to £417,002.75 the previous year.
