LMINL Musician. Caught in between.

Suno CEO Miky Shulman says making music isn't enjoyable. Tiny Purple God of Music Prince disagrees. Do we have to ask who's right?

There are so many facets to the AI music debate, and from many perspectives. For me, it comes down to one thing... The absolute joylessness of it. Stripping away the part that gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction.

I don't have a tiny percentage of the talent that Prince had. I will never have his critical, commerical or popular appeal that he did. But I still get as much joy has he did from making music.

Playing music is difficult. It's time-consuming. And it's heaven.

Happy Blue Monday. The so-called most depressing day of the year. No time of year seems to get as much hate as January. I'm guessing a lot of songwriters in the northern hemisphere don't feel that way.

I've always been happier writing music in winter. Proper winter, after Christmas has buggered off back to the attic. I love the quiet. Not just the practical quiet of being able to record without my neighbours lawnmower ruining it; the actual feeling of hibernation that you get. I can lock myself up with my guitars and keyboards without the guilt I feel in summer - like I'm wasting the weather and the daylight.

And then there's the optimism it brings with it. The feeling of starting over again. Reseting yourself. Making improvements here and there.

I don't think there's a better month for making music. January, I love you, and all the songs you bring.

No more fumbling or awkward reach-arounds in my studio...

This is one of those rare upgrades that’s cheap, simple, and genuinely life-improving.
Some of my gear has power switches in awkward places, so I hooked it up to a smart plug and now I can power everything on from my watch.

I use a extension plug (highly recommended) with a gen-whatever-the-current-one-is watch.

Tiny conveniences like this stop my brain from collapsing in on itself. And yeah, it makes me feel like I’m living in 2040. What's your favourite small studio upgrade? I'm always looking for new ways to over-engineer convenience.

This one means a lot. A lot has been said about the health challenges that I faced making The Dance Hall but very little of the album addresses that as there was so much else happening in the world, or my world, at the time.

In the past few years, my mum has been going through health challenges of her own. Mary is my letter to her. A love letter. An apology that she would dismiss as unnecessary.

It features samples from the music box that features on the cover of the single, a gift that my dad gave to my mum at the early stages of their relationship, and builds into a defiant, cinematic wall of sound.

The single is out on Friday 30 May and features an amazing remix of Kodachrome by Drew Makes Noise, and and instrumental of Mary.

2025 has begun with a lot of song writing on what (I hope) will be a second album but in the meantime, I'll be releasing Coloured In as a single on February 28th.

Eh? Coloured In? Sure, we've already heard it... I know, I know. But to lure you into revisiting my music, there will be a completely new version of Halo Light thrown in.

A remix is the common term, but that doesn't really cover it. It's a complete reimagining from the bottom up with very little that's recognisable from the original.

If anyone fancies some acapellas from the album to mess around with, by all means DM me and I'll send them over. I love hearing different takes on my music.
