Something struck me at my workshop last week.

I asked the room what was holding them back from showing up on social media and every single person had the same answers.

They hate the sound of their own voice.
They’re worried about what people will think.
They compare themselves to bigger accounts.
They’re waiting until everything is perfect.
They don’t think their business is interesting enough.
They won’t show their face on camera.

That broke my heart a little. Because every one of these business owners have something genuinely worth sharing.

May was hard. 😮‍💨

Social media is an incredible tool for growing a business but it has a dark side nobody talks about enough.

Everyone’s sharing wins. The launches, the milestones, the “we did it” moments.

But the in-between, the messy, gritty, what am I even doing parts? Never seen or talked about.

And that gap between where you are and where everyone else seems to be can genuinely break you if you let it.

May knocked me.

But it also gave me the shake I probably needed. A reset even and a reminder of what (and who) I’m actually doing this for.

So if you’re sitting in your own messy middle right now, please know everyone goes through this. You’re just in a part nobody posts about.

Don’t be afraid to say something didn’t work. Especially in business. It doesn’t make you sh*te. It makes you human.

If I had a pound for every small business owner I speak with that neglects their Stories on Instagram I’d be rich woman!

You have people already following you. Already interested in what you do. Already one step away from buying. And you’re not showing up where they live every single day.

Instagram Stories is prime real estate for your warmest audience. These are not cold strangers seeing you for the first time. These are people who chose to follow you. People who already know your name, your face, your business. They are the most likely people on the entire platform to buy from you.

And you’re leaving them on read.

Stories is not about going viral and it’s not about reach or growing your following.

It’s about deepening the connection with the people already in your corner. It’s where the real conversations happen. Where trust gets built. Where people feel like they actually get to know you and not just follow you.

Not because they’re better than you. Because they showed up and you didn’t.

But small business owners… can we talk about the AI generated graphics? 👀

I see them on small business Instagram accounts every single day and I promise you, people and your potential clients can tell.

The colours are a little too perfect. The text is a little too polished. The image is a little too... everything. And it looks exactly like the one the business three accounts down just posted.

Your small business is supposed to stand out on social media. Not blend in with every other AI generated post on the feed.

Here’s the truth about AI generated content for small businesses right now.

People are switching off.
