"Every now and then a particular aspect of an animal’s anatomy, diet, or exercise become fashionable and occasionally whatever it is will go viral. This inevitably leads to lots of hype and also confusion. When I was training to become an osteopath we had extensive lectures on the importance of fascia, not just as a connective tissue, but as an incredible organ with a multitude of functions. Medics and vets laughed at us whenever we mentioned it. Now it’s all the rage, with some people claiming to only treat this structure.

Another largely misunderstood part of the anatomy is the mighty vagus nerve."

Tony Nevin dives into everything you need to know about the vagus nerve. The importance, functions, and its areas of influence. You'll find this fantastic article in issue 36, from page 33.

"Tendon and ligament injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal issues in horses, particularly in performance and sport horses. Whether it’s a strained suspensory ligament or a ruptured flexor tendon, these injuries have long been seen as career-ending, if not life-ending, for horses. For decades, treatment options have been limited to rest, hope, and time. But that’s changing, thanks to a breakthrough innovation: EqueStride."

Want to know what we are talking about? Head to issue 36, page 26 and be ready to be blown away by this fantastic concept.

Following on from our post on Tuesday, we wanted to touch base about the ultrasounds for animal again. For example, for marine mammals, ultrasound has opened new diagnostic possibilities, where traditional imaging modalities are limited by size, anatomy, and safety concerns. When combined with positive reinforcement training, ultrasonography allows awake, low-stress evaluations.

In birds, abdominal ultrasound can detect reproductive pathologies
such as egg binding, gonadal masses, hepatic lesions, and even
cardiac abnormalities.

In reptiles, the technique is effective for identifying hepatic
lipidosis, follicular stasis, foreign bodies, and even gas embolism in
marine turtles caught in fishing nets.

If you're looking for an engaging, interesting and wonderful article to get stuck into, this article by Alicia Angosto Guerrero, DMV, PgCert, MSc in issue 36 is a must-read!

"Ultrasound has become an increasingly valuable tool in veterinary medicine—not only for domestic animals, but also for non-conventional species, including wildlife and marine mammals. As a non-invasive, safe, portable, and cost-effective diagnostic technique, ultrasonography offers unique advantages when working with exotic, wild, or aquatic species.

At its core, ultrasound allows real-time visualization of soft tissues by transmitting high-frequency sound waves into the body and analysing the echoes reflected back from internal structures. These waves are emitted and received by a handheld device called a transducer. The echoes are then converted into grayscale images, enabling clinicians to assess organ structure, detect abnormalities, and guide procedures with precision."

Alicia Angosto Guerrero, DMV, PgCert, MSc discusses why ultrasound is proving itself as a useful tool amongst treating, diagnosing and caring for our animals and how it is now a frontline diagnostic tool. Read more in issue 36, paperback or online.

We are looking back at time in Northern Thailand where he ran his Elephant Osteopath Workshop. These happen twice a year but these magical moments inbetween make all the difference too ✨

They had a visit up river to have the workshop blessed and to donate some money for the orphanage, the temple runs. They also spent time giving gifts to the orphans. The elephant osteopathy workshops always reach out to the wider community in the north of Thailand and have worked for several years supporting projects as well as helping with wider conservation NGO’s.

Fireworks night is on Wednesday and we wanted to share some tips to help your pets if they struggle with the fireworks going off as this can be a scary time for them.

- Walk your dog earlier in the day before it gets dark. This reduces the risk of being outside when fireworks start, helping to keep your dog calm and safe.
- Provide your pet with a den or hiding spot where they can go if they feel scared.
- Bring outdoor pets indoors overnight during firework season so they’re less exposed to noise and light.

We hope you all stay safe and enjoy fireworks night but please think about the animals too.

“In recent years, there has been growing public interest - and scrutiny - around animal welfare in sport. In the horse racing world, this has sharpened focus not only on how horses are cared for during their careers, but also on what happens to them after their final race. This is where Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) steps in, playing a critical role in safeguarding the futures of thousands of Thoroughbreds and, in doing so, helping to protect the broader industry's social licence to operate.”

Find out in issue 36 what RoR is, about their welfare work, eligibility and traceability and how Ror aims to ensure that each horse has a secure future once it leaves the training yard for the last time.
