I keep seeing the phrase ā€œcarp taxā€ being thrown around on social media, so I want to delve a bit deeper into it.

Do you actually think we get value for money from our rod licence?

The price has increased over the years, and while I understand that the money is reinvested into fisheries, I think itā€™s fair for anglers to ask what weā€™re actually getting for that money.

And then thereā€™s the way we buy and manage our licences.

Why does the whole system still feel so old and archaic?

Surely in 2026 there could be an app where you can buy or renew your licence, have your licence stored digitally, see when it expires and maybe even access information about where that money is being spent.

And what happened to the old physical licence cards? At least you got something to actually put in your wallet.

So I want to know what you think.

Is the rod licence good value for money?

Is ā€œcarp taxā€ a fair way of describing it?

And if you could change the licensing system, what would you change?
