♻️Review of UK 2018 waste strategy shows only 20% of policies fully implemented♻️

A review of the 2018 Resources and Waste Strategy undertaken by CIWM (the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management) has found that only 20% of the policies in the strategy have been fully implemented, with another 54% only partially in place. As a result, work is yet to start on over a quarter (26%) of the polices originally detailed over six years ago

The reasons cited for this slow rate of progress include frequent ministerial changes post 2018, preparing for the UK’s exit from the European Union and responding to the Covid-19 pandemic.

CIWM makes the point that while delivery of some aspects of the 2018 Resources and Waste Strategy, such as EPR (Extended producer Responsibility) and Consistent Collections, must be prioritised, the world has moved on. As a result, this strategy is now outdated will be unable to deliver a zero-waste economy which has the ability to deliver significant growth in UKGDP, increase jobs and maximise resource efficiency. CIWM believes there is an urgent need to produce a new Resource Resilience Strategy aimed at delivering a circular economy and helping the UK to achieve net zero.

♻️‘Be Kind to Our Team’ campaign launched at Reuse and Recycling Centres♻️

LondonEnergy, the company responsible for running seven Reuse and Recycling Centres across North London, has launched a campaign to encourage users of the sites to ‘Be Kind to Our Team’ and remind them that any form of abuse will not be tolerated.

The campaign, which will be promoted via social media and new onsite signage, follows an increase in cases of employee abuse, some of which have needed to be reported to the police.

According to the Environmental Services Association (ESA), its members experienced over 1800 incidents of violence and aggression in the 2021-22 period, with most cases involving verbal abuse at reuse and recycling centres. These figures represent only a portion of the issue, as not all ESA members reported their data, local authority data was not included, and many incidents went unreported.

LondonEnergy operates Reuse and Recycling Centres across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, and Waltham Forest. This include the capital’s newest reuse and recycling centre at LondonEnergy’s Edmonton EcoPark. The new site accepts over 150 different types of waste including large and small electrical appliances, garden waste and a number of hard to recycle materials like carpets, polystyrene and vapes.

♻️CIWM white paper calls for reform to UK battery recycling♻️

Fires caused by the batteries we throw away are causing a major crisis for the waste and resource management sector, taxpayers and the communities in which they occur.

In 2023 there were more than 1,200 fires caused, or suspected to be caused, by batteries at UK waste and recycling facilities or in collection vehicles (Material Focus, 2024), an increase of 71% from 2022. The cost of damage and lost time from these fires is estimated to be in the region of £158 million (Eunomia, 2021). The vast majority of these fires however were avoidable and resulted from batteries, in particular high powered, rechargeable batteries that should not have been placed in a bin but taken to a collection point.

The CIWM Qualifications white paper, based upon an extensive research programme report commissioned by CIWM and carried out by env23 Ltd, identified the lack of clear and impactful consumer information; the dramatic increase of batteries in everyday items; and the failure of producer responsibility rules to keep pace with the changing chemistry and pervasiveness of battery technology as the three main reasons for their incorrect disposal.
