This weekend on fresh fields, we return to the heart of a prehistoric landscape, where the past still lingers in the hills and fields around Cross Roads with Lees. Surrounded by the quiet echoes of ancient history, we’ll explore a place that was once significant from the Neolithic to the Iron Age peoples of Yorkshire.

To the east, the Catstones ring stands as a reminder of those who came before, whose origins are shrouded in mystery. Not far from there, a Roman road winds its way through the landscape, a lasting imprint of the empire’s presence in the region. To the south, Castlestead ring, still holds the stories of those who defended this land long ago.

This weekend, we’ll be hunting for relics from these early times, uncovering clues about the lives of the people who once called this place home. Even the Romans, in their expansion, built a road here, leaving their mark on the land.

If you’re interested in joining us on this journey into the past, there are still a few tickets available. Head over to Northern Detector Days and Events Group and be part of an adventure that uncovers the hidden history of Yorkshire.

It has been a cracking two weekends at Lumbfoot with some quite nice finds. One of my favourites is the mid 1800s ball and chain which more than likely was used on the convicts waiting to be sent to Australia. We also had a couple of hammered coins, an Elizabeth I and James I, as well as some lovely bits of silver, including some George III.

We also found some trench art from WWII commemorating the Tunis campaign 1943 which the Royal Yorkshire regiment was engaged. The ring was likely made from a shell casing. We also found a couple of WWII Royal Yorkshire regiment cap badges, that possibly are connected with the trench art ring.

All in all a great couple of digs in spectacular scenery.

This weekend, the 29th and 30th, we are on brand new fields at the same farm including the drained mill pond, spinning shed, mill footprint as well as pasture. Opportunity to detect in the river if you fancy bringing waders and waterproof gear.

The farm we are on occupies the land where Lumbfoot mill and associated mill and farm workers cottages once stood, as well as old pasture. All that is left standing is the engine room, chimney, drained mill pond and race. There are also 2 grade II listed pack horse bridges on the site. Bags and bags of verifiable history here.
