This course had 22 holes until, in 1764, the first 4 holes and the last 4 holes (which were considered too short) were combined to make the first 18 hole golf course - Old Course at St Andrews. https://linksgolf.co.uk/clubs/scotland/st-andrews.html

In 1873 the first Open Championship to be played on an 18 hole course was also here (2 rounds of 18 instead of 3 rounds of 12).
