Have you heard of 'growing around grief'? 🌱

We're often told there's a set timeline for grief. The growing around grief model challenges this idea.

This view of grief doesn't tell you that your grief will go away in time. Instead, it acknowledges there will be some days where you will feel your grief strongly, and others when you're able to move forward with other parts of your life.

It shows that we can grow a new life which includes our grief 💜

The relationship you had with the person who died was unique- so your grief will be too.

There are lots of elements to this job and I am so very honoured to be able to work with families during difficult times.
It struck me that perhaps the strangest thing is learning the stories of people I will never meet. All of the interesting, beautiful, funny, kind and loving individuals, I hear their treasured memories I learn about their loves and hates, their turn of phrase, I look at their photos.
Building a picture in my mind, and often thinking, how nice it would have been just to say hello.

“I hope people feel less alone.”

We’re pleased to introduce Lee House, author of It’s OK to Be Sad When It Rains — a heartfelt book combining poetry, stories, and reflections on grief.

Inspired by his own experiences of loss, Lee explores the exhaustion of grief, how it changes us, and why there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

At its heart, the book is about helping people feel less alone — a message that strongly resonates with the work we do at Cruse Scotland.

We’re incredibly grateful that Lee is donating a portion of the proceeds from book sales to Cruse Scotland, helping us support people through bereavement.

Thank you, Lee, for sharing your story and supporting our work. 💙

“It is not a matter of weeks or months; it is years and years.”

Rowan’s story is a powerful reminder that grief doesn’t follow a timeline.

After losing her husband, her dad, and experiencing the change of her child leaving home, Rowan found herself struggling to cope. When stress caused her to collapse, she reached out to Cruse Scotland for support.

Through counselling, Rowan found a safe space to talk, be heard and begin making decisions that had felt impossible.

“Just being able to talk to someone was such a saving grace.”

Today, Rowan feels better able to manage things and has recently taken the step into retirement.

Her advice to others experiencing grief? Give yourself time, be there for yourself, and don’t be afraid to talk to someone. 💙

Thank you to Rowan for sharing her story and helping us remind others that support is available, no matter how long it has been since a loss.

I found this little pondering written the year I lost my husband. I thought it was worth sharing

The flower of love and loss

Sometimes in life we forgot to look upon the ordinary days, but when we took the time we noticed that there was a flower growing on the corner. It's the seed we planted at the start of our life together, through time it flourished, and whatever the season it stayed in bloom.

As years went on its beauty may have become less obvious to others and perhaps sometimes even to us. Our flower still tended but with less care.

Looking back after the loss of one of its creators our little flower though fragile still holds beauty and vibrant colour. The hope is time will repair it , for now its in a safe and sheltered place.
