Every year we, well me, this is all me, have a massive "oh my Gods what are we doing??!" wobble. The Home Ed community being in the news and proposed registration and inspection isn't helping this year.
Try to remember however you educate it's you who knows your child best. If you follow the National Curriculum, buy in an overseas curriculum, unschool, learn online or have a big active week packed with classes and activities you're doing a great job! Try to allow how you do things to evolve and change and enjoy it when you find that sweet spot that feels like it works for everyone ❤️❤️❤️

Now I know a lot of folks had to read this at school so might be down on it buuuut bear with me!
Animal Farm was best, for us, as a read together book. We read it alongside a project on the Russian Revolution and made links between the animals on the farm and the human politicians.

A good discussion starter for questions like what was the animals original plan? What changed as time went on? Who was to blame for the death of Boxer? What is propaganda?

Content warning for some animals die, best avoided or tweak as you read for those who are sensitive.

One of my book posts disappeared!

Book three! Little House on the Prairie ☺️ I'm a little biased as it's my favourite book but it does contain excellent first hand accounts of travelling across America in a covered wagon. It describes the wildlife, scenery and isolation before the West was settled by white people as well as fantastic descriptions of how to build a log cabin and furniture, food that was eaten and the strained relationship between settlers and the Native people in the area. Content warning for, sadly historically accurate, attitudes towards Native tribes.

Next book! Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. Be aware there are two versions be sure to get the "adapted for younger readers" version!

We enjoyed this as a read aloud together book. Each chapter starts with a brief and well written explanation of an aspect of apartheid in South Africa followed by a personal anecdote from Noah's life. The anecdotes are often very funny, but obviously be aware they do mention racism, poverty, and a complicated family situation. The stories are really engaging and provoked some great learning conversations about how where and when you grow up affects your view of the world and the things you are taught.

I usually recommend websites and online things here but I thought for a change I'd recommend some books!

My number one all time home ed book recommendation is the Co**se Talk books by Adam & Lisa Murphy. The format is simple, Adam interviews a long dead someone about their life and then examines their greatest work/event/contribution. Lots of jokes hide a really fact packed examination of historical events and works. Plus it looks at historical figures from all walks of life and from all around the world not just the rich old white guys!! There are several collections but our all time favourite is "Storytellers".

This is just a friendly reminder...should you need it....that it's okay to take time off from home ed. Sometimes the education is in us demonstrating to our kids that when you're ill, or sad, or tired, or burnt out, or overwhelmed the best thing to do is curl up on the sofa and watch YouTube all day and eat a takeaway.

Home Education isn't just maths and past participles, sometimes it's teaching self care and time off ❤️

Coo just because 😂♥️

DS 11 is obsessed with geography at the moment. Naturally not the rivers and mountains kind that would be GCSE study useful, but flags and countries. He has managed to learn all 197 world flags!
Here's a big list of his favourite geography games and resources:

https://worldle.teuteuf.fr/
Name the country from its outline within six guesses!

https://globle-game.com/
Every day hunt for the mystery country on a globe, each guess tells you how far away you are to help you get nearer and nearer!

https://www.thetruesize.com
Drag and drop countries to compare true sizes without the distortion of the traditional flattened map. Very enlightening!

https://www.flaggle.net/
Guess a daily mystery flag by slowly revealing the colours.

https://tjukanovt.github.io/notable-people
An interactive globe that lets you look at the most notable person from anywhere in the world! It's all linked to Wikipedia so it's a brilliant rabbit hole to fall down!

If you'd like to learn countries or flags of the world Sporcle is a brilliant resource. It has quizzes to help you learn flags of any continent or the whole world and quizzes to learn the locations and names of countries.

We also love Jack on YouTube. He has loads of videos of him learning countries and flags and DS11 learnt so much from him. https://youtube.com/?si=eRE-h3gXp2Z2zRbR

We got out to The Tower of London last week!

I thought I'd try and share some thoughts on the visit for you folks ❤️

-If you claim Universal Credit you can get a ticket for just £1 per person! You have to book ahead, we looked the week before and there were plenty of slots available for the cheap tickets. You DO have to print off your UC states proof, other places don't ask but the Tower ticket office did look it over and ask for matching ID. But it's an insane saving 🤩

-Stairs...so many stairs. If mobility around steps is an issue there are large areas you might not be able to access.

-Lighting, one of my kids has a big sensory issues with lighting. The dim dark room with spot lights on the sparkly things is a huge no no for them. The Crown Jewels and to a certain extent the armoury are lit like this.

-If you need some quiet spots the moat flower walk was pretty peaceful.

-Seating, there are seats dotted about but not so many you can sit whenever you like.

I hope these are helpful points if you want to visit. Any other questions on my thoughts on visiting with a ND family??
