WHICH BROILER SPECIE IS BEST?
If you’re a poultry farmer, understanding the specie of birds is the best way to avoid most of the problems with stunted growth, Newcastle infection, height and weight challenges and general carcass quality.
I’ve heard from farmers countless times that their broilers don’t do very well as the other stocks they raised. It is possible too that they are from the same hatchery but what happens why they don’t grow at the same rate?
First, note that unless you are getting your chicks directly from the hatchery, they can be compromised. Forget the carton, delivery agents or suppliers can change your chicks for other chicks.
Secondly, general management practice is another determinant of your broilers performance.
Now Let's Get the Real Gist.
I’ve heard people say too that all broilers are the same it doesn’t matter which one you go for. That is a pure lie. All broilers are not the same unless you don’t care to know the different species of broilers and their growth and weight performance. They may look alike but the differences are always very clear in their growth performance and overall health.
I’ll be discussing the 3 major types of broilers species.
Note: there are numerous species of broilers including Ross 308, Marshall Broilers, Cob 500/700, Arbor Acre, Hubbard and Anak, but I’ll be discussing the 3 major ones in this post.
Abhor Acre Specie of Broilers
Ross 308 and 708 Species
Cobb 500 and 700 Species
Although the result for all broilers remains meat, they perform differently and meet their target meat value at different stages. Understanding this simple truth will help you always have the best experience as a broiler farmer.
Before going for the type of broiler specie, you should have an aim. I mean who are you producing your broilers for? If a suya man is your main target, you should consider raising a broiler that doesn’t have much fat and reach the market size within 4 – 5 weeks. Why? Because the suya men don’t buy too big chickens that has too much fat since it’ll be more difficult for them to roast. Also, to them, the price remains the same however big it is.
Now let’s look at these;
Ross 308/708: these are the major products of Agrited and Sayed. They are known for their fast growth rate, good breastmeat, excellent feed conversion and considerable lean meat (low fat meat)
Abor Acre+-: these are the major products of CHI. They are known for their heavy feeding, good weight and carcass and (good feed conversion)
Cobb – Cobb are some of the products from NPG Zartech, NPG Fidan, ,Cascada, Vertex, Goldsmine. Note: I use the word some here because all their products are not always Cobb species either 500 or 700. The REAL Cobb species of broilers are known for their lean meat, good height, and good breast mean and good feed conversion.
Now, looking at the above analysis it is obvious that all broiler species are not the same especially in growth performance, height and weight including their lean meat and breast conformation.
So?
If you’re a seller looking to market your chickens live, it is best to go for Cobb and ROSS species because of their height and growth performance.
If you’re a farmer who does frozen chicken sales, Abhor Acre species are best because of their heavy weight and overall carcass quality. These species may not grow as tall as the Cobb and Ross species but their weight may take a match.
Note: this is just my opinion from research and practical experience with these broiler species and it is not. Some farmers have raised Cobbs that gave general live weight far better than Abhor Acre – this boils down to the management practices.
The Ross 308/708 species will produce a perfect result for frozen chicken sales too.
The truth is, what works for someone else may not work for you too so, always do your investigations before going for your broilers understanding that there is a slight difference between the species which may determine your overall experience at the end of the day.

SOME COMMON MISTAKE WE MAKE.
There are some little mistakes we make in our poultry that affects us seriously. They might look not important to many people, but they are suffering seriously in their ignorance.
Now let's consider these common mistakes..
1. The Brooding Room: Most people do not arrange the brooding room very well. They do not cover it very well and they don't fumigate it before bringing their day old chicks. This causes a lot of infection that might cause serious mortalities on daily basis.
2. Adequate Heat: There should be adequate heat for the chicks from day 1 till one week. If your area is where there's too much of cold weather, you should continue giving them heat for 2 to 3 weeks. It hydrates them and also helps them to drink and eat well. Adequate heat also kills germs and also protect your chicks from being affected by some organisms or bacterias that causes infection.
4. Proper Attention: You see, if you know you won't have enough time to give attention to your birds, it is advisable that you employ someone to work for you or assist you. Be very attentive to your birds at all costs. Change their liters on time when necessary. Give them enough water and feed. When you discover they are not drinking water very well, check if that water is warm. If it is warm, change it with fresh water.
5. Proper Observation: The reason why most of us encounter serious mortalities sometimes is because we are not patient enough to observe our birds whenever we are feeding them. You don't just come and feed them and then piaaamm! you're gone! Be patient enough to do proper observation. This will help you to detect any malfunctioning in them easily and treat them on time before it takes hold of them too much. Late treatment always causes a lot of problems and even discouragement due to much of death of birds we are experiencing.
6. Techniques Used in Treatment: If we want to treat our birds effectively what should we do? Don't just come and mix the drugs yet. There's a technique to use. The techniques are:
(a). Before you feed them, first of all remove all the drinkers.
(b). Feed them but don't give them water.
(c). Wash the drinkers and allow the birds to eat for about 20 to 30 minutes. By this time they are very thirsty for water after eating for a while.
(d). Mix the drugs with clean water and give them. You will see that they will drink it very well.
(e). Repeat the same technique for the number of days you're to administer the drugs.
7. Washing of Feeder & Drinkers With Sponge: The mistake we make sometimes is that we only clean the feeders instead of washing them before using them for new birds. This is not proper as it may cause infection. And again, whenever you want to give your birds water, wash the drinkers with sponge. The antibiotics we give our birds becomes harmful after 24 hours in the water. Some people would not change the water because they found out that the water is still much in the drinkers. We need to be changing it and give them fresh one.
8. Antibiotics & Multivitamins: For the purpose of keeping your birds in healthy condition, you need to be mixing antibiotics with multivitamins for them continually till they reach table size before you withdraw from antibiotics. As multivitamins helps to boost their system and also makes them eat well, antibiotics also keeps them healthy. But whenever you want to administer special drugs, you will have to pause from antibiotics and vitamins till the drug days are complete before you continue.
9. Environmental Sanitation: Keep the environment clean. Some people leave their poultry environment dirty and disgusting. By doing this, you're putting the birds at risk.
10. Report in Time: Some people think they know it all. When they discover any problem in their birds of which they're not even sure of what exactly the cause is and the solution to it, they will never report to others and seek help. If you're such type of person, when you begin to face serious mortalities that may lead to frustration, it's all your fault. Nobody is an island of knowledge.
There are many mistakes we make which sometimes teaches us lessons. And this also helps us to adjust ourselves and put some things in order.
Let us also try and get some PDF of the common diseases in poultry farming. It is also advisable to buy the materials to read. Try also to see how you can adjust in your market strategy if you feel things are not going well as you expect it.
And remember, don't forget that God is the Arch of your life and business. Pray that He should help you back it up. May God give us more wisdom and help us to prosper and progress in our tasks. Amen!
God bless all our farmers
