Envoy Assures Nigerians Visa Restrictions Are Security Measures, Not Sanctions

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has clarified that the recent visa restrictions announced by the U.S. government are not directed at Nigerians, but are part of efforts to improve security screening.

Mills made this known during a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, December 21. He explained that the presidential proclamation, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026, applies to specific visa categories and is intended to enhance border security and safeguard American communities.

โ€œThe focus of the visa review is on ensuring proper vetting and credible information in the visa process, not on penalising Nigerians,โ€ Mills said.

According to the ambassador, the proclamation clearly outlines the visa categories that may be affected, while also providing exemptions for certain travellers

He noted that holders of official and diplomatic passports, as well as those travelling for religious purposes, are excluded from the restrictions.

Mills advised visa applicants and the general public to visit the official website of the U.S. Embassy for comprehensive details on the proclamation, including affected visa categories and applicable exemptions.

The clarification follows a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, December 16, further limiting entry into the United States for nationals of countries classified as high risk.

The White House cited ongoing concerns over inadequate screening, vetting and information sharing as threats to national security and public safety.
Nigeria is among the 15 additional countries placed under partial entry restrictions.

Prominent public affairs analyst, Mahdi Shehu, has strongly criticised the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over its opposition to the death penalty for terrorists and kidnappers, accusing the administration of yielding to foreign influence, particularly from the United States.
In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Monday, Shehu said the governmentโ€™s stance sends a troubling message at a time when Nigeria is grappling with worsening insecurity, mass killings and rampant abductions across the country.

Ghana Deports 42 Nigerians, Others Over Prostitution and Related Crimes

Authorities in Ghana have deported dozens of foreign nationals from the Ashanti Region following court convictions linked to prostitution, fraud, and other criminal activities.

Among those removed from the country are 42 Nigerians, according to a disclosure by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene.

The deportation exercise also affected citizens from other West and Central African countries, including 13 Cameroonians, three Ivorians, three Burkinabe nationals, and seven Benin nationals.

The minister shared details of the operation on social media, explaining that the deportations followed rulings by various courts in the region.

โ€œA total of 42 Nigerians, 13 Cameroonians, 3 Ivorians, 3 Burkinabe nationals, and 7 Benin nationals have been deported from the Ashanti Region to their respective countries following various court rulings involving Q-Net, prostitution, and other criminal activities.

I commend the Ghana Immigration Service for its professionalism, diligence, and firm commitment to enforcing our immigration laws, while upholding due process and human dignity.

Their collaboration with the courts and other security agencies continues to strengthen public safety, protect vulnerable persons, and preserve law and order in the region.โ€ he said

The latest deportations come at a time when there are increasing reports of tighter enforcement measures, heightened scrutiny, and mass arrests of Nigerians in several countries abroad.

NDLEA Nabs Female Co***ne Kingpin as 23.5kg Drug Cache Is Found in Childrenโ€™s Room

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a suspected female drug kingpin in Lagos, uncovering 23.50 kilograms of co***ne hidden inside her childrenโ€™s room, nearly two years after a major co***ne trafficking syndicate linked to her was dismantled in the South West.

The suspect, Shodunke Yetunde Simbiat, had reportedly gone into hiding in May 2024 following the collapse of a trans border drug cartel led by Bolanle Lookman Dauda and his wife, Olayinka Toheebat Dauda. The couple were earlier arrested with large consignments of co***ne during an NDLEA operation in Lagos and Ogun states.

According to a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the couple were intercepted on Saturday 25th May 2024 by operatives of a special operations unit along the Ibiye axis of the Lagos Badagry expressway as they attempted to cross into Ghana with co***ne.

โ€œAt the point of their arrest, 42 blocks of co***ne weighing 47.5 kilograms were found on them.
A swift follow up operation in their residence at Plot 24/25 OPIC extension, Petedo road, Agbara, Ogun state, led to the recovery of additional eight blocks of the same drug weighing 10kg, bringing the total weight of the consignment seized from the couple to 57.5 kilograms.โ€

Babafemi said NDLEA operatives sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts to track down other members of the trafficking network. These efforts later identified Simbiat, a 39 year old woman described as the syndicateโ€™s stash keeper, as a key figure within the drug trafficking organisation.

She was eventually traced to her residence at 31 Onasanya Street, Surulere, Lagos, where she was arrested on Tuesday 9th December 2025.

A thorough search of the house, Babafemi disclosed, led to the recovery of co***ne blocks weighing 23.50 kilograms concealed inside a black suitcase kept in her childrenโ€™s room. The suspect reportedly confessed to owning the drugs, which NDLEA estimates to be worth over N5 billion on the streets.

The arrest marks another significant breakthrough in the agencyโ€™s ongoing efforts to dismantle trans border drug trafficking syndicates operating across Nigeria.
