🇯🇵🌐Speaking at the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on 31 May 2026, Japan’s Minister of Defense, Koizumi Shinjirō, outlined Tokyo’s approach to regional security, deterrence, and cooperation amid growing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific.

Koizumi said Japan’s defence policy is not based on identifying any specific country as a threat or pursuing military confrontation. However, he described China’s expanding military capabilities, rising defence spending, and limited transparency as matters of “serious concern” for Japan and the wider international community.

Rejecting accusations from Beijing that Japan is embracing “new militarism”, Koizumi argued that such criticism overlooks China’s own military development. “There’s a country that has a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and strategic bombers. Japan has neither of such weapons, and yet Japan is labelled ‘new militarism’,” he said.

Despite heightened tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, Koizumi stressed the importance of continued engagement, stating that Japan’s “door is always open” to dialogue. He also expressed disappointment that he was unable to meet Chinese Defence Minister D**g Jun at the forum.

Emphasising cooperation among allies and partners, Koizumi said that “division weakens deterrence, unity strengthens deterrence,” warning that fractures between the United States, Europe, and like-minded countries could create opportunities for coercion and instability. He highlighted expanded defence cooperation through the Quad, as well as Japan’s growing security partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.

Koizumi concluded by reaffirming support for a free and open Indo-Pacific, stating: “We seek a region that can stand against coercion. We seek a region that is not misled by falsehoods. We seek a region that is not influenced by pressure.” He added that preserving such a region is a responsibility that must be shared and passed on to future generations.

🇺🇸🌐Speaking at the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday (30 May), US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth argued that military capability and defence investment remain central to maintaining international security and deterrence.

In one of the speech’s most direct remarks, Hegseth said: “We don’t need more conferences. We need more combat power… Less Shangri-La, more ships, more subs,” arguing that military strength is essential to underpin security commitments and strategic competition.

He also stated that “if you can’t back them up with hard power, the rules are not worth the paper they are written on,” emphasising the role of defence capabilities in supporting international security frameworks. Hegseth welcomed increased defence spending by European allies, saying many countries are now seeking to strengthen military readiness after years of underinvestment.

Highlighting the Trump administration’s defence priorities, Hegseth pointed to a proposed $1.5 trillion US defence budget, describing it as a “generational investment” aimed at expanding shipbuilding, missile defence, munitions production, emerging technologies, and Indo-Pacific military capabilities to strengthen long-term US deterrence and force posture.

🇷🇺🇦🇲🇪🇺Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union summit on Friday (29 May) as tensions escalated with Armenia over its growing engagement with the European Union. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not attend, citing election campaigning ahead of June parliamentary polls.

Moscow signalled potential economic consequences, warning that gas, fuel and trade arrangements could be revised if Armenia continues its EU accession path. Russia also pressed for a referendum on whether Armenia should remain in the Eurasian bloc or pursue EU membership.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said Saturday (30 May) that it recalled its ambassador to Armenia for "consultations”.

"The Russian ambassador to the Republic of Armenia, S. Kopyrkin, has been recalled to Moscow for consultations about steps taken by the Armenian leadership on a rapprochement with the European Union, thus undermining cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union," the ministry said in an official statement, referring to the Moscow-led regional customs union.

Friction between traditional allies Russia and Armenia has grown since Azerbaijan regained control of the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023. Armenia accused Russia and its peacekeeping forces of failing to deter Baku’s military offensive and, in 2024, froze its participation in a Moscow-led regional security bloc.
