Hospitals & Overwhelm

“Well that’s the nature of hospitals…” was the response I got, when in complete overwhelm, verge of tears, and asking for a quieter spot to wait with Mum.

For somewhere that helps people feel better, it is not safe for those that battle with too much noise, too many people and overstimulation.

I have forgotten my lanyard, I don’t have a fidget and I am at the point of wanting to punch people in the throat…. I am not angry with anyone and I don’t want to be the aggressive person in the room but when overwhelm hits, that’s how my brain responds. It’s my version of “fight or flight”.

I am an adult experiencing this, imagine how our kids feel when we bring them in to these spaces. No choices, no calm, no quiet, no support.

We need to do better.

Do you get that sweaty moment when you meet someone new? When you have to talk to a bunch of people? When you have to ask someone for help?

Off “out-out” this evening and this picture tells such a different story to the real situation….

The first moment of panic was noticing that I look older with make up than without….

Then came the “what do I wear” pit in my tummy. Oli came in and chose for me. “Put some fake tan on your legs and stop putting yourself down” was the jist of the convo.

Then needing to leave Archie. He hasn’t had dinner. He will be on his own for half hour. Should I def go?

The parking changed, the car park is now a block of flats (which shows how long it’s been since I last ventured out this way). Found somewhere new, I can do this.

Train ticket machine, pushed two buttons and chose not to stress myself out - headed to the desk. Managed to get the train that was at the platform and have been working since… Now nearly at Waterloo.

I did it…. I can do hard things. Now just to find Leicester Square and my Mum 🤣🤣



And sorry but whenever I type neurodiversity I wish it was a separate branch of the dance troupe… I could live out my performing dreams 🤣
