The Carriage Foundation, registered charity 1162356 A group of carriage experts and enthusiasts currently involved with the exciting project 'Carriages

In 1991 a small group of horse drawn carriage enthusiasts came together to form The Carriage Foundation. The aim of the organisation was and still is to preserve and promote the care, preservation and interpretation of carriages as an integral part of the history of transport. Over the coming years new members joined and the founder members were able to share their knowledge and expertise with oth

ers ensuring a continuation of specialists in the field of horse drawn carriages. Representatives now offer advice to organisations worldwide. Recently core members have been considering how the organisation can be more beneficial to a wider public audience. With the Charity Commission recently granting The Carriage Foundation charitable status, we now aim to manage, support and seek funding for various carriage related projects. Initially a website will be created which will host our first major project: ‘Carriages of Britain’. The project will consist of a searchable and illustrated database of carriages within UK collections, essays, and a photographic archive. Initial work has identified over 1200 carriages in publically accessible collections which will all have an entry on the database. ‘Carriages of Britain’ will become the first port of call for anyone wishing to research horse drawn vehicles. Further developing our work, The Carriage Foundation are hosting a series of study days through the winter as well as the two established study tours. Long term plans are to explore the possibility of founding a National Carriage Museum. If anyone would like to find out more about our work or be involved with our projects with research or financial support please do make contact.

On Friday 25th July there will be a gathering of curators, conservators, scholars and historians at the Nottingham Industrial Museum.
The gathering is to observe and discuss the two mid 18th century carriages that belonged to John Baskerville of Birmingham. We will learn all about the recent discoveries relating to the carriages and about plans for their future, which is to, hopefully, trundle them back to Birmingham.
It will be a fascinating day, hearing the thoughts and ideas of various specialists.
A few spaces have become available. If you think you might like to attend the afternoon (1-4pm) then do please message Amy to discuss the event further.

The Baskerville carriages have caused quite a stir within the John Baskerville Society. The connection between the Birmingham printer and the carriages has only recently been confirmed with hardcore evidence.

We are so fortunate to have some internationally renowned experts in their subjects join us for the Study Day at Wollaton Hall. They are so excited to be seeing the carriages for the first time, items that have such a personal connection to a man they have spent many years studying, publishing works on and have great admiration for.

This will be such an amazing opportunity for those attending the event.

We have a few spaces left so some along!

Amy is an idiot and apologies for this evenings utter chaos. She completely forgot about the Zoom talk for The Carriage Foundation. At 7.15pm picked up a message, shot into Dexter's (husband's) office to print off her notes, paper got stuck in the printer, all came out in a different order and no page numbers. Was feeling a bit stressed and started coughing.

Several people were having difficulty with sound and even logging on so it was a disaster!

The talk will be re-run in a couple of months. The link will be circulated and Amy will set an alarm on her phone...
