Back when BMW treated beauty as a core engineering principle, not an optional extra, it produced one of the finest-looking Gran Tourers of all time.
The 1970 BMW 2800 CS marked the beginning of BMW’s elegant E9 coupé era, a line that would later give birth to the legendary 3.0 CSL. Introduced as a more powerful evolution of the earlier 2800-based coupés, it paired BMW’s smooth 2.8-litre M30 straight six with a lightweight, Karmann-built body that delivered both refinement and genuine sporting ability. Its long bonnet, pillarless coupé silhouette set the design language for BMW grand tourers throughout the 1970s, while its mix of luxury and performance helped re-establish BMW as a serious maker of premium sporting cars at a time when the company was still rebuilding its global identity. The 2800 CS wasn’t just a model — it was the car that put BMW back on the map as a maker of fast, stylish, and beautifully engineered coupés.
