My observation is that in traditional Zulu culture, a man who takes more than one wife does not typically hide his wives or children from one another. His family is acknowledged openly, and there is an expectation that all of his children know they belong to the same family. Zulu wives generally understand the possibility of polygamy within their cultural context, and the emphasis is often on maintaining family unity rather than creating divisions through secrecy.

This is why I struggle to understand Jonasi’s behaviour. A man who hides one family from another, asks people to keep secrets, or prevents his children from knowing each other does not reflect the values I associate with responsible polygamy. To me, this is less about culture and more about an individual’s character and choices.

The saddest part is often seeing women remain in these situations, tolerating behaviour they know is hurtful because they fear judgment from society or the consequences of leaving. In the end, honesty, accountability, and respect for all partners and children matter far more than a man’s cultural background

Matipa works her way into the Gomora empire, and her arrival accelerates the collapse of Joyce’s carefully controlled family life. ïżŒ And yes it would be easy to villainise Matipa. But let’s be honest: the system that puts women in competition with each other instead of holding men accountable is the real villain here.

Based on the bestselling novel by Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi ïżŒ, this is African storytelling at its most raw and real. Women are not props or prizes in this story they are complex, flawed, powerful human beings fighting for their dignity in a world that was not built to protect them.

Is polygamy shown as glamorous? Sometimes. But is it shown as fair to women? Absolutely not. And that is exactly the conversation we need to be having.
