Left Field will be following what promises to be a fascinating Holborn and St Pancras byelection campaign very closely – starting today with our article on what’s at stake for both parties and why the Greens see this as their best shot yet at a breakthrough. We’ll also be reporting from both the Labour and Green conferences in Liverpool and Brighton respectively and promoting Left Field at both venues too – of course, that costs money we don’t have as a reader-funded outlet. So, if you can spare the cash, our GoFundMe fundraiser would make a real difference to what we can do on the ground.
Thanks, as always for your support.

Latest on Left Field: The resignation of Keir Starmer as an MP has triggered a byelection that looks set to become the first real test of the “Burnham bounce” – and a serious opportunity for the Green Party to make its long-awaited breakthrough in London.

The Green Party leader’s bid for Holborn and St Pancras could become the first real verdict on whether Andy Burnham’s early poll bounce survives contact with actual voters.

Our latest weekly newsletter, Field Notes, is out now and we’re striking an optimistic note. After all, it’s a bank holiday weekend (not that there’s many high street bank branches left) but you get the drift. Read about why the left is bigger than it thinks and a whole lot more other stuff at the link below. And please do subscribe and encourage others to do so.

Welcome back to Field Notes – and happy bank holiday weekend! After a week that’s brought plenty to be angry about, we wanted this one to lead with something else: hope.

New evidence to the undercover policing inquiry shows senior officers knew the Special Demonstration Squad’s infiltration of protest groups couldn’t be justified – yet the Home Office and Cabinet Office let it continue for decades. Great article here by Paul Heron, a solicitor from the Public Law Interest Centre.

Left Field’s Andrew Hedges has reviewed a brilliant new book, published this week, that doubles as a portrait of his own County Durham and argues that the left needs to empower the classes it aspires to represent.

Andrew Hedges reviews a new book, published this week, that doubles as a portrait of his own County Durham and argues that the left must learn from Thatcher’s success at ‘subject formation’ if it wants to build one of its own.

On the issue of the climate crisis, Andy Burnham looks to be alienating the very groups that should be his natural allies – unless he's been bought off by the fossil fuel lobby. Has he?

More than 50 organisations, from Greenpeace to Friends of the Earth, have written to the prime minister demanding he name fossil fuels as the cause of this summer’s extreme weather.

A shocking new report from the Royal College of Nursing exposes the scale of grotesque exploitation of staff taking place in the social care sector. Here’s our story on Left Field.

Nearly 400 cases of exploitation in three years, from illegal repayment demands to underpayment and bullying – as the RCN calls on Andy Burnham’s government to end employers’ grip on nurses’ visas.

LATEST NEWS: - Copernicus data shows July 2026 among the hottest on record, with Arctic ice near historic lows. The technology to fix this already exists – but union leaders defending fossil fuel jobs are standing in the way, says Brian Green.
