How Howie-G Discovered a New Musical Direction

Howie-G’s latest release, “Ahí Quiero Estar,” represents an exciting new direction and his first exploration of reggaeton.

The idea began with a song written several months earlier called “Where I Wanna Go Is Where I Wanna Be.” As so often happens in Howie-G’s creative process, the rhythm suggested a completely different musical world. Rather than forcing the song into a familiar style, he followed where the beat naturally wanted to go.

Its sense of movement, sunshine and celebration seemed perfectly suited to reggaeton. The original idea was reshaped in Spanish, becoming “Ahí Quiero Estar”—“That’s Where I Want to Be.”

The production grew into one of Howie-G’s most ambitious vocal arrangements, incorporating more than twenty individual vocal lines. Lead voices, harmonies, responses, rhythmic phrases and celebratory calls were layered together to create the atmosphere of a gathering beside the sea.

This is how Howie-G often discovers a new musical direction: it begins with the rhythm. The rhythm establishes the emotion, the emotion suggests the sound, and the sound leads the song somewhere unexpected.

The Story Behind “Let’s Go to Timbuktu”

“Let’s Go to Timbuktu” grew from a deeply personal and difficult period in Howie-G’s life.

The story began when his dad became paralysed. It was a life-changing experience for the whole family, bringing emotional challenges, sadness and uncertainty. Throughout that time, the family stayed close and supported one another as they faced the difficult journey together.

After his dad passed away, Howard asked his mum one day, “What are you going to do today, Mum?”

She replied, “I’m going to Timbuktu. because it's far away”

This was a place where she could escape, even briefly, from the grief and everything the family had been through.

Howard answered, “Okay, let’s go.”

That simple but powerful conversation stayed in his heart and became the inspiration for “Let’s Go to Timbuktu.” The song carries the story of a family living through illness, loss and grief, while holding on to love, memories and the hope of finding somewhere peaceful beyond the sadness.

This song is dedicated with love to Howard's mum and to the memory of his dad.

The Story Behind “I Just Wanna Be With You”

Some songs begin with a grand plan. This one didn’t.

“I Just Wanna Be With You” was born from one of those unexpected moments when inspiration arrives without warning. It started with nothing more than a simple rhythm tapped out on an ordinary cardboard box. What could easily have been thrown away became the heartbeat of a song.

That simple rhythm sparked an idea. Layer by layer, the music began to grow. Warm jazz chords, gentle grooves, tasteful saxophone phrases and a relaxed vocal gradually transformed a humble beginning into a smooth jazz recording designed to help people slow down, breathe and simply enjoy the moment.

As a young drummer, Howard developed an instinctive feel for rhythm that people often commented on. On one occasion, two newspaper journalists—working independently and writing around 250 miles apart after seeing him perform—both remarked on the distinctive uniqueness of his rhythm. Howard has always regarded that not as something to boast about, but as a gift from God to be used in serving others through music.

Perhaps that’s why this song began, not with an expensive instrument or elaborate production, but with a simple rhythm tapped out on an ordinary cardboard box. What seemed insignificant became the foundation of an entirely new song, proving once again that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.
