Looking back, it all feels a bit like a daydream.

Three years ago, Alex was six, Ember was six months old, and we moved onto our land to live in a caravan here in Bulgaria. The plan had sounded much more sensible when we talked about it from England than it did once we were actually here.

It was the middle of a Bulgarian summer. We had no air conditioning, very little shade, and a long list of jobs that needed doing before we could even begin thinking about building a house.

People sometimes ask how we managed it.

The truth is, I think we were running on pure adrenaline.

By that point, we'd already been through a lot, and our mindset had become very simple. We stopped looking too far ahead and just focused on the next thing in front of us.

One thing I remember vividly is our daily exploration drives.

Most afternoons we'd pile into the car so that Ember could have a proper nap in the air conditioning. We'd drive around exploring villages and back roads, while Alex enjoyed the chance to cool down and usually convince us to stop for an ice cream.

At the time, it was simply a way of getting through the heat..Now it's one of the things I remember most fondly.

We had so many dreams for this place. So many ideas, plans and things we wanted to create. But at that point in our lives, we weren't thinking about the finished house or everything we hoped to build one day.

We were just taking it one step at a time and feeling grateful for each morning that we got to do it together.

There were difficult days, of course there were..But there were many good days too.

And somehow, those are the ones that stay with us.

Three years later, we're still in the caravan, still building (a strawbale tiny home), and still figuring things out as we go.

Looking back, it all feels a bit like a daydream..But I'm very glad we lived it 🇧🇬

Whenever we meet Bulgarians, one of the questions we get asked most is:

'Why Bulgaria?'
..It's a fair question

The absolute truth is, Bulgaria was never part of some grand plan.

Over eleven years ago, Phil and I were travelling through Europe in our Land Rover. Bulgaria was supposed to be a country we drove through on our way somewhere else.

Instead, it stopped us in our tracks.

Back then, social media wasn't what it is today. We weren't following travel influencers or watching videos telling us where to go. We had a guidebook, a map, and a sense of adventure.

What we found here truly surprised us.

The mountains. The villages. The food. The history. The people.

We left knowing we'd found somewhere special, although neither of us could have imagined that one day we'd end up living here.

Now, almost five years after buying our land and more than three years after moving here permanently, we live not too far from the very road we travelled all those years ago.

We regularly pass one of the campsites we stayed at on that trip.

Every time we do, it feels slightly surreal.

Back then we were two people passing through, wondering what was around the next corner.

Now we're raising our children here.

Life is funny like that.

Sometimes the places you least expect end up feeling the most like home 🤍

Today's harvest 🥒

I know they're only cucumbers, but I was genuinely excited when I saw the size of them this morning.

I actually called everyone over to look.

After all these years of teaching, working, moving countries, having children and building a house out of straw, you'd think I'd be past getting excited about a cucumber.

Apparently not 😂

These are the Sandra variety and they've done brilliantly. Alex is already talking about making tarator, so I think we've got our plans for the week sorted.

One thing I really love about living in Bulgaria is how normal growing food is. Not in a trendy way. Just as part of everyday life.

It's also made me realise that growing your own doesn't have to be all or nothing.

You don't need a huge off-grid plot.
You don't need a polytunnel.
You don't need to get everything right.

A few pots on a balcony. A raised bed. A couple of tomato plants.

That's how a lot of people start.

There's something really satisfying about eating something you've grown yourself, whether it's one cucumber or a whole garden full of them.

And if a cucumber can make a grown woman this happy, I'd say it's worth a go 😁🫣🤍

We love sharing our build journey and honestly, we can't wait to get the next video up.

One thing we've always tried to do is explain our decisions where we can. Not because we feel we have to, but because sometimes a little bit of context helps people understand the bigger picture.

The reality is, we know there is enough work here to keep us busy for years.

We have lists of ideas, plans for the future, and projects we'd love to get started on tomorrow.
..But then there are days like this.
🥽Two children in a paddling pool.
🦋A butterfly landing nearby.
🦅A bird circling overhead that needs identifying.
☁️A cloud that suddenly looks like a dinosaur.

Before I had children, I don't think I truly appreciated how precious time is. Not really.

It's easy to think there will always be more of it.
More summers.
More opportunities.
More tomorrows.

But life is happening now..Not when the house is finished..Not when the land is perfect..Not when every job on the list is ticked off.

Now.

That's a huge part of why we moved abroad in the first place. We wanted our time with the children to be part of everyday life, not something squeezed into weekends, half terms and summer holidays.

The build matters to us.
The dream matters to us..But these moments matter too.

And if we've learned anything over the last few years, it's that some things are worth putting the tools down for 🤍

This year has tested a lot of people in Bulgaria.

We thought the rain was bad enough, but then came the storms.

We've seen flooded streets, flooded homes, hail damaged crops, and livelihoods affected in a matter of minutes. It's been heartbreaking to watch.

Living off grid can look quite romantic online, but weather has a way of bringing you back down to earth.

The truth is, we could have chosen an easier route.

If we'd built with bricks, some of these storms probably wouldn't have kept us awake at night in quite the same way.
.but we didn't.

We chose to build the house we'd dreamed about for years. A self-built straw bale home. A project that has stretched us in ways we never expected.

At times it's genuinely felt like an episode of Grand Designs 🫣🤣 The sort where you're laughing one minute and wondering what on earth you've taken on the next.

We're still not halfway through.

There have been setbacks, redesigns, moments of doubt, and plenty of days where things haven't gone to plan.

But there have also been lessons, memories, and stories that we'll probably still be telling years from now.

So for now, we'll keep going 💪
.One bale, one beam, one step at a time.

I was chatting to another content creator recently about how easy it is to forget that everyone starts somewhere.

Not just with off-grid living, but with life in general.

We all arrive with different experiences, different priorities, different budgets, different responsibilities, and different ideas of what a good life looks like.

Some people move abroad for adventure. Others for opportunity. Others because they need a fresh start.

Some people would happily live in a caravan for years. Others would find a few weeks challenging.

Some people dream of a large off grid homestead. Others just want a quieter life and a small garden.

What I've realised over the years is that we rarely know the full story behind someone else's decisions.

We don't see the private struggles, the financial realities, the health challenges, the compromises, or the countless conversations that shaped the path they're on.

Yet it's so easy to look at someone else's journey and think, 'I would have done that differently.'

Of course we would..Because we're not them.

We've lived on our land in a caravan for three years now. The choices we've made won't be right for everyone, just as someone else's choices wouldn't necessarily be right for us.
.And that's okay.

The beautiful thing about sharing our journeys online is that there is room for all of us. Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different dreams. Different ways of doing things.

After all, we're all just doing the best we can with what we've got.

And when we've all got something different, our best is going to look different too 🤍

Happy Sunday.

P.S. We'll be back to regular video uploads soon and we hope you'll join us for the next chapter, let's get this strawbale tiny home built!

Today, Phil took Alex to the БАТА АГРО show in Stara Zagora.

He climbed into the cabs of some of his favourite machines, asked a hundred questions, and came home talking non-stop about his future 🚜

For years now, he's said he wants to be a farmer.

Today's visit didn't change that dream. If anything, it made it even bigger.

There is something really special about watching your child discover what excites them, what inspires them, and what they want to work towards.

We don't know exactly where life will take him, but we do know this: every journey starts somewhere.

For now, we'll keep encouraging the dreams, answering the questions, and cheering him on every step of the way.

And today, one little boy came home believing that anything is possible 🤍

This week, Alex completed second grade.

Not just completed it, but completed it with excellence 🤍

As parents, it's easy to focus on the result, but when we think about this year, it's the journey that makes us most proud.

The confidence that has grown. The challenges he has overcome. The way he has embraced learning in a language that wasn't his first.

Over the last two years, we've watched his Bulgarian go from a handful of words to something that has opened doors, broken down barriers, and given him the confidence to find his place in a world that once felt very unfamiliar.

Watching your child work hard, keep going, and slowly realise what they're capable of is a special thing.

We are incredibly proud of him 🌱
