How does a multi-billion dalasi national project simply disappear?

In 2017, Gambians were introduced to what was described as a groundbreaking project a proposed US$48 million (over D3 billion) forensic laboratory expected to transform the country's security and justice system.

The state of the art DNA and forensic science centre was presented as one of the biggest investments in The Gambia's security sector. It promised modern investigations, scientific evidence gathering, and a major boost to the fight against crime.

Fast forward to today.

Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang has reportedly told lawmakers that there is no trace of the project in government records.

Now, human rights activist Madi Jobarteh is calling on the National Assembly to seek answers from those involved in the project's inception, including former Interior Minister Mai Ahmad Fatty.

The unanswered questions continue to grow:

1. What happened to the project?
2. Why are there no records of such a significant national undertaking?
3. Was a transformative opportunity for The Gambia lost before it ever began?
4. And most importantly, who should be held accountable?

For many Gambians, this is about more than a missing project. It's about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that promises made in the name of national development are properly tracked and explained.

A wave of sorrow has swept across the University of The Gambia community and many people across the country following the tragic passing of former UTGSU Vice President, Yunusa Mbye. According to reports, Yunusa lost his life after sustaining injuries during an incident in Fajara. The news has left friends, colleagues, former classmates, and members of the wider community deeply saddened.

Yunusa was widely respected for his dedication to student advocacy and his contributions to the University of The Gambia Students' Union. Throughout his time in leadership, he worked tirelessly to represent students and support the growth of the university community.

Many remember him as a humble, hardworking, and committed young man whose impact extended far beyond campus walls. His final public appearance was on West Coast Radio on 3rd June 2026, where he participated in a discussion on the program "Pencha Mi."

As family, friends, and the nation mourn this heartbreaking loss, calls continue for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, shower His mercy upon him, grant him peace in the grave, and admit him into Al-Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

Rest in Peace, Yunusa Mbye. Your contributions and legacy will not be forgotten.

Two close friends, both just 14 years old, sadly lost their lives after one got into difficulty while swimming. In a courageous act, the other immediately tried to help his friend, but the powerful waves proved too strong for them both.

The devastating incident has left families, friends, and residents of Latrikunda Sabiji in deep sorrow. One grieving mother shared that she had seen her son peacefully resting before leaving home, never imagining it would be their final goodbye.

As the community comes together to support the affected families, many are also calling for greater water safety awareness and vigilance around beaches and other bodies of water. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.

Please take a moment to share your condolences and help spread awareness about water safety.

Frequent power outages are devastating market businesses, with vendors watching their perishable goods spoil day after day. The unreliable electricity supply is causing huge financial losses and putting countless livelihoods at risk. Vendors are now demanding urgent action to fix the ongoing electricity crisis before more businesses suffer.

They have also thrown their support behind GALA's planned protest on 19th June, warning that if NAWEC fails to address and regulate the persistent power outages, they will stand with the movement and make their voices heard.

How much longer should vendors and ordinary citizens continue to suffer?

A major turnaround for Austrian developers Manuel and Angelika Mitterer.

Less than a day after a court dismissed the criminal proceedings against the couple, they have now successfully recovered their passports and other personal belongings that had been held by authorities for almost a year.

The items were returned today after the pair reported to police headquarters, marking the end of a lengthy dispute that has drawn significant public attention.

The latest development follows the court's decision to throw out the case and order the immediate release of their documents and possessions.

A significant moment for the Mitterers and another chapter closed in a story closely followed by supporters and observers alike.
