Did You Know?

Scotland has its own “Stonehenge,” older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge itself.

It’s called the Callanish Stones, located on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. These standing stones were erected around 2900 BC, about 500 years before Stonehenge. Their exact purpose remains mysterious, but they’re believed to have been used for astronomical observations or ritual ceremonies aligned with the lunar cycle. Local legends say they were petrified giants who refused to convert to Christianity.

They’re stunning, remote, and far less touristy—almost like a secret sacred site lost to time.

If you want to visit the Callanish Stones, here’s a travel tip to make it unforgettable:

Go during the summer solstice (around June 21st). At that time, the moon and sun align in a way that some believe the stones were originally designed to track. The light during these long northern days is ethereal—locals call it the “Simmer Dim,” a kind of twilight that lasts nearly all night.

How to get there:
• Fly or take a ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.
• Rent a car—public transport is limited.
• Stay in a local B&B or croft house near the village of Callanish.
• Visit late in the evening for solitude and magical light. It’s open year-round, and free.

While you’re there, stop by Callanish II and III, lesser-known nearby circles with their own mysterious charm. It feels like stepping into another world.

I’ve got to say – it was an absolute privilege to be at the very first ever performance of Restless Natives: The Musical at Perth Theatre tonight. History in the makin’, so it was! You could feel the buzz in the air – folk knew they were witnessing something special.

To be there on night one, seeing this brilliant, bold new musical burst into life right on our doorstep? Magic. Just pure magic.

Restless Natives: The Musical is an absolute belter! From the moment the curtain went up, it had the whole crowd grinning like we’d won the Euromillions and been handed a Tunnock’s Teacake for the road.

The performances? Unbelievable. Every single yin of them gave it laldy – belting out new tunes that had folk tapping their feet and humming along before the second chorus. By the time the finale came round, I was practically up on the seat, singing like I was auditioning for the sequel.

And the cast? Oh, these are no just performers – they’re future stars, mark my words. Talent spilling oot of them like Irn-Bru fae a shaken can. They’ve taken a cult classic and turned it into something fresh, fierce, and fantastically funny.

If you’ve got a pulse and even half a sense of humour, get yourself along. You’ll laugh, you’ll sing, and you’ll leave with a grin wider than the Clyde. Pure dead brilliant!

Scotland Once Tried to Colonize Panama – And It Was a Disaster
In the late 1690s, Scotland launched an ambitious plan to establish a colony in Panama, known as the Darien Scheme. The goal was to create a trading route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, due to poor planning, disease, and attacks from the Spanish, the colony failed spectacularly. The financial losses were so devastating that Scotland was nearly bankrupt—one of the key reasons it agreed to the 1707 Act of Union with England.
