𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗔 𝗞-𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀
Recently, a K-Drama series has gained immense popularity in the Philippines, especially among educators, because it tackles the crucial theme of educational rights. The series centers on the ERPB, an organization dedicated to breaking down all barriers to education. As a public school teacher, I was drawn not just by the strong acting, but by how relatable the conflicts are. Today, students’ attitudes toward teachers and education feel so different from what we knew as "Batang 90s" and those before.
In the early episodes, the ERPB inspectors intervene directly with troubled students, giving the impression that students alone are to blame for educational decline. But as the series unfolds, it underscores the vital role of teachers, parents, and school administrators. It reminds us that discipline is not just imposed; it is nurtured, starting at home and brought into the classroom. This week’s events, the tragic school shooting in Tacloban and the recent stabbing in Cainta, are a stark reminder that we must address discipline at its roots.
While the series is fictional, it offers a valuable lesson for us: administrators must take proactive steps, supporting both families and teachers, so that we don’t need to rely on external interventions like an ERPB. The question we must ask is: do we need to bring an ERPB to the Philippines, or can we, starting from home and school, create the culture of discipline ourselves?
