STOMACH ULCER: DEFINITION, CAUSES AND TREATMENT

A stomach ulcer, also called a gastric ulcer, is a sore that develops on the lining of the stomach when the protective mucus barrier is weakened and acid damages the tissue.

Causes: The most common is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Long-term use of painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin, excess acid production, smoking, alcohol, and stress can also contribute.

Symptoms: Burning or sharp pain in the upper abdomen, especially when the stomach is empty, bloating, nausea, poor appetite, or in severe cases, vomiting blood or passing black stools.

Treatment: Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics to kill H. pylori, proton pump inhibitors (like omeprazole) or H2 blockers to reduce acid, and antacids for relief. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol.

👉 Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications such as bleeding or perforation. With proper care, most stomach ulcers heal completely.
