I'm currently helping a client publish his life story, and this short paragraph made me stop and smile.
"This is the period of my life during which I first started work and began to have a bit of money in my pocket and started to become independent of my parents even though I was still happily living at home."
Just a few simple sentences, yet they bring an entire era to life.
He's writing about the late 1950s and early 1960s, when young people were beginning to enjoy a freedom their parents had never known. Wages were spent on dances, music, friendships and discovering the wider world after the hardships of the Second World War.
What strikes me isn't the history. It's how easily these memories could have been lost.
Every family has stories that deserve to be remembered. The first pay packet. The first dance. The first car. The first home. The little moments that never make the history books but become part of a family's identity.
One day, those stories stop being told.
That's why I do what I do. Not simply to publish books, but to help preserve voices, memories and lives for the generations that follow.
What story did your mum or dad tell so often that everyone in the family could recite it by heart?
