How you put your baby to sleep tonight is how you'll be putting them to sleep at three, four, ten years old. Kristin Smith knows sleep habits don't expire. They compound. A short-term investment that lasts a lifetime.

The support system your mum had? It doesn't exist anymore.

She had your grandma down the road, your aunt two streets over, a whole neighbourhood of women who just... showed up.

Most of us are doing this in a flat, in a city where nobody knows our name, with a group chat and good intentions.

And somewhere along the way, we started calling that normal.

Serena, Sara and Kristin Smith talk about what it actually takes to rebuild community as a modern mum β€” not the Instagram version, the real one.

Here's a question: when's the last time a service you hired followed up a year later?

Not to upsell. Not to email-blast. Just to mark the anniversary and say, we remember.

Kristin Smith, a founder whose company has grown to 14 states on exactly this kind of thinking. A thank-you gift says "we're done." A one-year gift says "we were part of this. We still are."

The upshot is retention the ordinary way doesn't touch. Families who got one gift tell three friends, and those three tell three more.

The best services are the ones you stop needing. That's the trap, right? If you do the job well, the client walks away.

Kristin Smith’s answer wasn't "charge more." It wasn't "lock them into a package." It was "do the job so well that the next three families are already calling."

Referral is the business model when retention physically cannot be. Most of us treat referrals like a lucky bonus. She treats it like the spine.

What's the thing you're afraid of being too good at?

The whole idea of medical residency was designed by a man who was reportedly running on co***ne. So the system we trust to operate on us is built around doctors surviving on no sleep, because the guy who wrote the rules was high.

We laugh at that. Then we walk new mothers out of the hospital and hand them a baby, and somehow expect them to drive, work, parent, and not drop the ball.

Kristin Smith, running 200 team members across 14 states, is saying the quiet part loud. We accept chronic sleep debt for mothers the same way medicine accepted it for residents. Until someone crashes the car.

What would change in your week if you treated your sleep like a safety issue, not a personal failing?

We spend months preparing for a single day β€” and almost nothing preparing for the weeks that follow it. The sleep deprivation. The identity shift. The moment you realise nobody's coming to tell you what to do next.

Kristin Smith, a postpartum doula, joined Serena and Sara on Fearless & Flawed to talk about what actually helps, and why we've been thinking about rest all wrong.

Swipe through β†’ then tell us: what do you wish someone had told you about week one?

Two nights of sleep won't fix postpartum exhaustion. But it tells Kristin Smith something about how we still underestimate what new parents are going through. Women have careers. They have lives. Saying yes to support is the strongest thing you can do.

Tenacity is a learnable skill, not a personality trait.

The instinct to try again isn't some rare founder superpower. It's a choice you make at the moment of rejection. Keep making it. Karen Minsky made that choice with retailers who told her she was too small. She ended up in nearly 6,000 of them.

Kristin Smith went to every birth and saw the same thing: incredible preparation for delivery, zero preparation for what comes after. That's when she shifted from midwifery to postpartum sleep support. Teaching families from day one.

Two hundred team members. Fourteen states. A travel team that lives in an RV and moves around the country caring for newborns. A multimillion-dollar postpartum care company.

Started by a 19-year-old mom in New York who was nursing her own baby and somebody else's at the same time, because the nanny job she had didn't leave her enough milk or choice.

Our guest, Kristin Smith, built the company she wished had existed when she was the one who needed it. She also just had a five-week-old through adoption, after a long fertility journey. So she's living the work in real time, again, while running the business that was built from the first time round.
If you're building anything from scratch with a small human attached to you, this one is for you.
