OTD in ’67 — Paul at Julie Felix’s Chelsea Flat

On this day in 1967, Paul attended a party at the Chelsea flat of Julie Felix, a figure who sat at a fascinating crossroads of folk, television, and the London counterculture.

Julie Felix (June 14, 1938 – March 22, 2020) was an American-born folk singer who became a genuine British TV star. The Times once called her “Britain’s leading lady of folk.” Born in Santa Barbara, she hitchhiked across Europe in her early twenties, playing coffeehouses and clubs — and along the way, she met and befriended Leonard Cohen, helping introduce his songs to UK audiences.

By the mid-1960s, Felix had become a regular presence on British television, hosting Once More With Felix on BBC2 — a rare platform where folk, pop, and emerging rock artists overlapped. Her Chelsea flat became a natural gathering point for musicians moving between scenes rather than belonging to one.

Julie’s personal life reflected that same fluidity. She had a discreet romantic relationship with Dusty Springfield at a time when such relationships were rarely acknowledged publicly, and she was briefly involved with McCartney during his post-Jane Asher period. In 1968, she was arrested at Heathrow for possession of cannabis.

Looking back late in life, Felix summed up her life this way:

“Fate whisked me along.”

Moments like this party don’t make headlines — but they sketch the social map of 1967 London, where folk singers and Beatles shared the same rooms.
