Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is now included in the newborn bloodspot screening programme across Forth Valley and Scotland.

With parental consent, babies born in Scotland are routinely screened for SMA shortly after birth.

SMA is a genetic condition that affects the muscles, caused by nerve cells in the spinal cord not working as they should. This can lead to muscle weakness over time.

Early detection is vital. Screening allows treatment to start as soon as possible, significantly improving outcomes and giving babies the best possible start in life.

This reflects our ongoing commitment to early diagnosis, improved care, and supporting families across our communities.
