Symposium 1 Saturday 9th October 2010, Gilmorehill, Glasgow In Symposium 1 we looked at the view from within Scotland in relation to the current situation for art and artis. There were four keynote presentations by Christine Borland, Dr. Neil Mulholland, Prof. Philip Schlesinger and AHM. Symposium 2 Saturday 2nd April 2011, Hawthornden Lecture Theatre, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh Symposium 2 had an international emphasis, and we invited renowned expatriate Scots to reflect on the current situation from outside Scotland. Keynote presentations were given by eminent Scottish artists, critics and curators who live and work abroad, namely Douglas Gordon, Berlin, Peter Hill, Melbourne, Margaret Hunter, Berlin, Thomas Lawson, Los Angeles and Dr. Jim Mooney, London along with video presentations by Neal Ascherson London and Liz Ann Macgregor, Sydney. Symposium 3 Saturday 1st October 2011, DCA, Dundee This symposium will aim to bring together the key issues and other threads from 1 and 2 to offer a possible way forward. AHM’s third and final symposium will bring together speakers who are prominent in promoting the role of art and culture in shaping Scotland’s future. We will also bring together the themes of our first two symposia and reference the historic conference “What Kind of Scotland?” that took place in Edinburgh in1973. Organised by the magazine Scottish International we believe it to be of particular relevance to the present debate about Scotland’s future as a nation and as a society. The keynote address will be delivered by Gerry Hassan, a leading writer and critic on culture and politics, Presentations will be given by Jenny Brownrigg Exhibition Director The Glasgow School of Art, artist Ross Sinclair and Jean Urquhart MSP. Gerry Hassan, the main speaker, has consistently argued the case for cultural change and transformation “ It is time to start living dangerously and take risks. To think and act beyond tribes and labels. Instead, we need to develop new forms of engagement, discussion and debate, developing spaces, forums and places which aid this. This is time for humility, courage and listening, for trying a different kind of politics. It is time to start living, breathing and taking part in the new Scotland.” One Minute Artist Manifestos A key element of the day will be the spoken delivery of one-minute artist manifestos where artists have the opportunity to give voice to their concerns and ambitions about where they feel visual art stands today and what the future might hold. Artists delivering manifestos will include Andrew McCallum, Yuck n Yum, Tara Beall, Helen Shaddock, Ewan Morrison, Chris Dooks, Jacob Kerray, Shauna-Penn Florida and Tim Collins.
