How do you think you’d feel about life, if you received a cancer diagnosis? How do you think you’d feel if you received a second one, before you were 29 years old?

The answer will vary from person-to-person , but for singer Roísín McCarney, the choice was very simple: to REALLY live on her own terms.

Faced with a paralysing, but then utterly liberating realisation, that life wasn’t forever, she decided to live each day just doing what she really loved. Of course, she exists in reality and still had to work, but she immersed herself in her passion and it soon became work.

What began as making songs in her bedroom, quickly developed into singing in front of Tom Jones on The Voice and being on the cusp of touring as a support act for a worldwide megastar musician.

Roísín is still undergoing cancer treatment and she’s still going through life with passion, energy, vigour and gratitude. In the midst of what could understandably debilitate her in every imaginable way, she’s living for today, not sweating the small stuff and staying true to what really invigorates her soul: her music.

As we recorded our conversation at sunset on the banks of Loch Lomond last week (when it was bloody roasting and the sky was clear blue), I felt uplifted beyond all description.

Life will deal all of us a difficult hand at least once, and we’re entitled to really feel the weight of whatever it is. But when we’re ready, we can pick ourselves up, carry on, and be all the wiser for it.
