Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – In a landmark decision aimed at fostering grassroots development and equitable governance, the Ebonyi State House of Assembly (EBHA) has unanimously adopted a referendum for the creation of twelve additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
The move, which was approved during a plenary session at the State Legislative Complex in Abakaliki, seeks to increase the number of LGAs in Ebonyi from thirteen to twenty-five. The initiative is expected to bring government closer to the people, stimulate economic growth, and address perceived imbalances in the distribution of local councils based on population and landmass.
The newly proposed LGAs include:
- Ikwo South and Ikwo North (carved from Ikwo LGA)
- Ekumenyi (from Abakaliki LGA)
- Ebyia (from Izzi LGA)
- Ndiagbo (from Edda LGA)
- Ishielu South (from Ishielu LGA)
- Akaeze (from Ivo LGA)
- Ukaba (from Onicha LGA)
- Effium (from Ohaukwu LGA)
- Izzikworo (from Ezza-South LGA)
- Amohai (from Ezza-North LGA)
- Imoha (from Afikpo LGA)
The motion for the adoption of the referendum was moved by the Chief Whip of the House and Member representing Edda West State Constituency, Hon. Prince Nkemka Okoro-Onuma, and seconded by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, Member representing Ikwo North State Constituency.
Lawmakers emphasized that the creation of more LGAs would enhance administrative efficiency, reduce economic hardships, and ensure fair representation across the state.
In a related development, the House also conducted the first reading of a bill for a law to establish the Ebonyi State Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission, signaling the state’s commitment to promoting inclusive governance.
The referendum will be gazetted upon final approval, officially increasing Ebonyi’s LGAs to twenty-five. The expansion is expected to accelerate infrastructural and socio-economic development at the grassroots level.
