When Lily was a very small child she would swing from the bars over the viewing chamber outside of Boots, asking when we were going to “go down there.” Over the years, when walking past, she has said “don’t forget, we’re going down there one day.”

Well, over 10 years later, we finally did it! Today we took a Civic Trust tour of the Eastgate Chamber. We booked online in advance, met our fantastic - extraordinarily knowledgable - volunteer guide at the Museum this morning, and off we went.

Gloucester has such a rich and interesting history. We learned SO much! We must go back to show the boys.

We have also had The King’s Bastion tour recommended to us (there is a tour day on Friday 11th September for Heritage Open Days. However, there are only VERY limited spaces remaining as I write this). Be sure to check out the website for future tour dates:

Ad. You’ve definitely walked past the tank in Gloucester Docks before, but have you ever been inside the ?

“Dedicated to the memory of all those who have served their country as Soldiers of Gloucestershire,” it is an educational and enjoyable addition to your day.

They have lots on for the summer holidays including, but not limited to, their summer trail, crafts, ‘meet a red coat,’ and exhibition handling.

It’s super interactive and there’s lots to see and do.

Despite being ridiculously shy upon entering, Joseph was yapping away by the end of his visit and even managed to persuade dad to buy him a figure from the gift shop.

We discovered a local gem AND had a lovely time crafting today at the City Works 💎 ♻️

Joseph is thrilled with his bracelet, which he chose to make out of lots of materials available to create from.

We then went into the Scrapstore and let me tell you …. I am in awe! I love living sustainably. I love crafting. Put the two together and BAM! 💚

I genuinely had no idea it was there! Have you found the Gloucestershire Resource Centre yet? 🙌🏼

Gab’s top tips:

🛰️ Download your walk before you arrive (and be prepared to use the car park pay machine as opposed to app payments). It is extraordinarily unlikely that you will get phone signal here (perfection 🙏🤣).

🚤 Bring cash for the hand ferry. Adults are £2 each. Children under 12 are £1. Dogs are allowed (but I am unsure what/if you are charged for them).

⚠️ Check ahead to see if the ferry is running and if Biblin’s bridge is open. I recommend always starting with the ferry at the start of the walk as opposed to relying on it running at the end.

🥾 Last time I did the walk from the car park to Yat Rock I followed a group of school children up who didn’t moan at all. I will say, however, that I know for a fact that my kids would have moaned the whole way up. You know your kids better than I do 🤣 Base your activity on your own abilities and enjoyability! Do be prepared to pay again for parking if you drive to Symond’s Yat Rock though (unless you’re a member or start at the top of course).

🏕️ This footpath goes through so be prepared to behave appropriately and keep your dog on a lead whilst passing through.

We have visited King Arthur’s Cave (another nearby attraction) previously, but have plans to head back to the area to visit Goodrich Castle in the summer 🏰

📍 Tewkesbury Medieval Festival
🗓️ 11th & 12th July

Joe and I headed to the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival today. Having grown up in Tewkesbury, the battle and parade were an annual staple (I lived on Church Street as a teenager and would open my window to watch the parade from my bedroom).

I stopped at the bar for a cider on our way to find a spot for the battle, and Joe spied a couple of empty seats on the bar roof. Hands down, best spot in the house (well, best I’ve found based on my previous watching experiences 🤣).

Great people and great vibes today (as always) 🙌🏼🍺🌞 Highly recommend if you’ve never been before.
