Today I celebrate 12 years of Recovery 🥳...
🌟12 years🌟 - no drinks, no bags, no needles, no potions, no pills and no pipes 👌🏻...

I remember 12 years ago just wanting the pain to stop, I could not go on as it was... I had reached another rock bottom. 💔 I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, I didn't want to keep letting my family down or continue living the way I was... I was done!!! 😞

Recovery has not been an easy journey, I was unprepared for the emotional pain and discomfort involved, but with the help of other people in Recovery, my wife ❤️, my children 🫂, my family 🫶🏻 and friends 🤗 I have learned (just for today) I don't need to numb how I feel... That's what drugs did for me, numbed the pain and stopped me feeling ❤️‍🩹...

My life today is a million miles away from where I was ✈️, I am married to my beautiful wife, we have a daughter together, I gained a son, I see my grown up twin boys, bought a home, I have a career and built a little business 👏🏻... I went and got an education and have some qualifications I'm proud of 🧑🏻‍🎓...

BY FAR THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THING THAT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS HAS BEEN REGAINING CONTACT WITH MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER SKYLER ✨️
I LOST CONTACT WITH HER 14 YEARS AGO DUE TO MY ADDICTION AND BEHAVIOUR 😔...
TODAY WE ARE TALKING AND GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER... SHE IS JUST AMAZING!!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE 💜

Along the way I have lost many friends to the hands of addiction 😭, I hope my cleantime honors them 💜...
Today I am grateful and blessed by God to have the life I have 💯❤️

Some days you’ll carry it with strength.
Other days it will feel fu***ng heavy.

Both are healing.

You don’t have to erase your past to move beyond it. You just have to stop letting yesterday steal too much of today.

Carry the scars.
Carry the lessons.
Remember the people you lost.

But keep fu***ng living. ❤️

I will always root for the underdog, because I was him.

Some of us were written off long before we had the opportunity to understand ourselves.

I was clever. I was kind. But I was massively under-stimulated, carrying things I didn't know how to explain and trying to find my place in environments that didn't always know what to do with me.

I was hard work at school. Hard work at home.
Hard work in the community.

Eventually, I found myself in situations and environments that seemed to fulfil the prophecy already written about “kids like me.”
And that's the danger of writing young people off. If someone is repeatedly treated like a problem, excluded like a problem and spoken about like a problem, we shouldn't be surprised when they eventually begin to see themselves that way.

But behaviour is not identity.

Behind the difficult behaviour can be intelligence, pain, creativity, fear, potential and a desperate need to belong somewhere.

People can change. I'm living proof of that. But change becomes much harder when the systems designed to support people are overstretched, underfunded and unable to provide the time, relationships and individual support some people desperately need.

Sometimes a young person doesn't need another person telling them what's wrong with them.
They need somebody willing to stay around long enough to discover what's right with them.

That's why I'll always have time for the black sheep, the difficult kid, the one sitting outside the classroom, the one everyone else has given up on.

Because sometimes the person everybody has written off is simply a person whose story hasn't finished being written yet.

Never confuse someone's current circumstances with their potential.

Opinions - everybody has them 🤔

Sometimes we become so consumed by what other people think of us that we lose sight of what actually makes us happy, who is really important, what gives our life meaning, and who we really are.

The truth is, people will always have opinions.
Some will celebrate you.
Some will criticise you.
Some will misunderstand you.
And some will judge decisions they’ve never had to make, from a life they’ve never had to live.

You cannot build a meaningful life around keeping everybody else comfortable.

At some point, you have to turn the volume down on the outside world and ask yourself:
Am I living in line with my values?
Am I acting with integrity?
Am I being true to what I believe?
Am I becoming someone I can respect?

If the answer is yes, keep walking.

Because the loudest voice in the room isn't always the wisest one.

Listen to advice. Be open to challenge. Stay willing to learn and grow.

But never hand somebody else the pen and allow their opinion to write the story of your life.

Your values are your compass.
Your integrity is your foundation.
Your life is yours to live.

Accountability ✨️

There’s a huge difference between being held accountable and being held hostage by your past.

Accountability shines a light on the problem. It asks us to own our part, take responsibility, learn from it and make different choices moving forward.

Being held hostage is different. It keeps dragging you back to the same mistake, the same failure, the same version of yourself... even when you’ve acknowledged it, worked on it and changed.

Healthy accountability creates growth.
Being held hostage creates a prison.

We should absolutely take responsibility for the harm we’ve caused and the choices we’ve made.

But accountability should eventually open a door, not permanently lock one.

Own it. Learn from it. Make amends where you can.

Change your behaviour.

Then give yourself permission to move forward.
