The Monster Squad, released in 1987, features pastiches of the Universal Monsters, led by Count Dracula. Director Fred Dekker took inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and The Little Rascals, and thought about doing a crossover of the two.
Duncan Regehr narrowly beat a then little known Liam Neeson for the role of Dracula, and Tom Noonan chose this film and the role of Frankenstein over Near Dark. The film ended up being cut by 13 minutes by the producers, who did not want it to run more than 90 minutes.

By the second weekend of it's release, the film was averaging a dismal $696 per screen and was pulled from theaters with a poor domestic tally of $3,769,990.
However, the film has gained a cult status in the years that followed and has proved popular with critics and the public. Sadly, actor Brent Chalem, who played Horace, did not get to witness the film's popular resurgence, having met an untimely death from pneumonia in 1997, at the age of 22.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a 2010 dark fantasy horror film written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins, and directed by Troy Nixey in his feature directorial debut. It is a remake of the 1973 ABC made-for-television film of the same name.
For the design of the creatures in the film, Nixey drew inspiration from pictures of mole rats, and the name of "Emerson Blackwood", the character who built the mansion in the film, is a tribute to Algernon Blackwood, another writer of supernatural horror stories.

The House of the Devil by Ti West combines elements of both the slasher film and haunted house subgenres while using the "satanic panic" of the 1980s as a central plot element. It pays homage to the style of horror films of the 1970s and 1980s by using filmmaking techniques and technology commonly employed at the time. The opening text claims that the film is based on true events, a practice used in horror films such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Amityville Horror (1979).

A remake of Takashi Shimizu's 2002 Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge, Sam Raimi's film is the first installment in The Grudge film series. Shimizu was hired to direct The Grudge with Sam Raimi producing.

The plot is told through a nonlinear sequence of events and includes several intersecting subplots.
The film grossed $187.3 million worldwide, and received mixed reviews from critics.

The initial inspiration for 1979 supernatural horror The Fog came to John Carpenter when he and his collaborator and then-girlfriend, Debra Hill, visited Stonehenge in 1976, where they witnessed an eerie fog rolling over the landscape from a distance.

The film divided critics upon release, receiving praise for its visuals and acting, and criticism for its structure and screenplay. Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed $21.3 million domestically and has established a cult following.

Released in 1988, the third and final entry in the original Poltergeist film series, it follows Carol Anne Freeling, who is terrorized by malicious spirits while staying in her aunt and uncle's apartment at Chicago's John Hancock Center.
The film marked O'Rourke's final performance, as she died four months before its release at the age of 12. Her death resulted in marketing complications for MGM, who did not want to exploit the tragedy. The film earned negative reviews from critics and disappointed at the box office, earning $14.1 million against a $9.5 million budget.
One critic said "Another sequel that seems to exist for no better reason than justifying its title and number ... The effects, which revolve around the conceit of a demonic mirror-world, are ingenious and cleverly executed. The acting plummets into realms of posturing camp, howling corn and eye-rolling hamminess that shatter illusion like a dropped glass."
