🐾 We are running low on blankets at our Edinburgh centre 🐾

If you have any you would like to donate to our animals, we'd be very grateful. We have plenty towels, sheets and knitted blankets but are running low on larger fluffy type blankets we use to line dog beds to keep them warm and cosy 💜 (we can't accept duvets/pillows as the stuffing can cause harm if ingested)

We're always blown away by the support we get from these appeals - thanks to anyone who is able to donate! The Edinburgh centre reception is open every day for drop offs between 11am-4pm.

Last weekend my daughter had a play date with her bestie, and the house quickly turned into a mini fashion show. Outfits were pulled from drawers, the wardrobe was emptied, and we had a full-on catwalk happening through the living room.

The next day, we tackled the mountain of clothes together. It was the perfect chance to chat about what she actually wears. Playing dress-up had reminded her of things she’d forgotten about, and it made it easier to spot the pieces she’d outgrown or simply didn’t like anymore.

- We made a bag of donations
- We created a list of items to replace
- We put everything else neatly back where it belongs

Our best tip when it comes to kids’ clothing: less is more. Children grow so quickly, and overstuffed drawers usually mean you’re holding onto things that no longer fit or get worn. Too much choice can even feel overwhelming, which is why kids often rotate through the same handful of favourites anyway.

A simple, streamlined wardrobe makes getting dressed stress-free for both kids and parents.

🚒 People are often surprised when I tell them I used to be a firefighter (most assumed I was there to do the admin when I turned up on jobs!).

But firefighting and decluttering actually have more in common than you’d think.

The first rule of firefighting? Contain the fire. Once it’s contained, you can control it.

Decluttering works the same way.
If every item has its own contained space, it’s under control. But the moment things spill out of their boundaries, chaos spreads — just like fire.

✨ Craft room refresh ✨
We recently had the joy of helping a very talented client with her craft room/office. Every corner was filled with beautiful creations, but with a big renovation on the horizon, the first step was to make space for the future.

Together, we sorted through her supplies — bringing categories together so she could clearly see what to keep, what to sell, and what to let go of. Now, when the new space is ready, everything will be easier to relocate and set up just the way she wants it.

It was such a pleasure to see her creativity shine through while making room for the next chapter. 🌿💡

When Sophie and I created Lighten the Load, it wasn’t because we just loved organising cupboards (although we do love a tidy shelf!). It came from something deeper.

We’ve both seen how easily clutter can build up - especially when life throws curveballs. A busy family life, the challenges of neurodiversity, or the fog of bereavement… suddenly “things” pile up, and with them comes an invisible weight.

We know how heavy that feels.
We know how hard it can be to even know where to start.

That’s why this work means so much to us. Lighten the Load is about more than decluttering, it’s about helping people find calm again in their own homes. It’s about making space for breathing, healing, and living.

For us, the joy isn’t just in the clear shelf or the organised drawer - it’s in seeing someone’s shoulders drop, their smile return, that sense of relief. That’s when we know we’ve done what we set out to do.

Because everyone deserves a home that feels like comfort, not chaos.
